The album.......The Joshua Tree, is now 20 years old.

What do you guys think is the better album, considering time, state of the band, and the audience.......

Achtung Baby .........................or ....................The Joshua Tree.

I love the Joshua Tree, but I love Achtung Baby even more.

Cheers.

I've never really enjoyed U2, as much as their fortune and fame suggests I'm the only one in the world who doesn't. Except for one shining moment when the 'Pride' video came on air, the rest is a bit blurry. It was so different from all the other new wave bands eating most of the replay time on MTV. Here was a rock band.
But, that was about it for me.
My friend had Bono ask him after a concert about where to find nightlife in Auckland. Seemed to think the guy was alright. I'm sure he is. But, as for the music, Zoolander, Million Dollar Zoo, or whatever it was, it was beyond me.

I'm old..Boy was the best album in my opinion. At that time I was a big Clash fan, but I thought the U2 "clang clang" was better than the crap Boston-Kansas-Journey-Led Zeppelin rotation that kept going on the major stations.
It took a LOOONG time for people to warm up to U2. It wasn't until 1983 that the Irish and Irish-Americans in America started to see them as something to be proud of.

edit. too stipud

I'm with shaggy sue on this one, the older U2 are much better than the MTV rock band they became.

Boy, October and War were classics, and they kept the quality all the way until Rattle & Hum. After that they went 'new wave' or some sheet with the cowboy hats, and space suits. I lost interest and never really gave Achtung a chance.

..."Joshua Tree" has aged the best (except for "Bullet the Blue Sky"- one of the most horrendously bad tracks ever committed to tape by any band ever). Having said that, "Actung" is one of my favorite records ever. It sounds extremely dated, but that's cool... I enjoyed the 1990's. Also, have to say "Rattle + Hum" is one of their most under-rated records. The rest, minus one or two songs, I can pretty much do without.

The Unforgetable Fire is my favorite. However, even though I'm an Irishman, I have to say that they are a wildly overrated band.

I prefer Achtung. Hearing for the first time it really didn't sound like anything else I'd heard before.

Pre-Eno/Lanois was "pure" U2. Youthful energy and something to prove.

Enter 1st Eno/Lanois/Americana, with The Unforgettable fire, The Joshua tree and Rattle and hum. Polishing the diamond.

Next is U2 trying to go it alone, and things quickly fall apart. The band becomes larger than the music. The pop tackiness of a Warhol creation, but lacking the genius.

The return of Eno/Lanois to give U2 one more brief creative thrust, namely All that you can't leave behind.

I predict Bono will become the Pope, The bassist will edit fashion/style magazines, the Edge will become a session musician and Larry Mullen will become a farmer.

Yep, me too. It is rare that you have a CD in wich most of the songs are actually really good.

Even Better than....
Mysterious Ways......
ONE (yeah if you don't like that one, well..........)
Your So Cruel (excellent)
Trying to throw your arms around the world.............pretty good.

Oh, I do think Bullet The Blue Sky is a fairly good song. It has a cool bass line...........ginda has a good groove.

cheers.
