My co-worker, who is being shafted by our boss due to housing, made the comment that passive people, generally, are the ones who are able to stick around and make a go of it in Korea.
I have found this to be somewhat true, although you can mix in the types who almost look for a fight, as well as those who have to be here just so they can make enough money to live on. |

Haha! I'm passive at work because I like getting paid. I'm not passive on my own time, however. |

Passive people won't stay because they hate to be treated like *beep*.
Agressive people don't stay because they don't fit in to this style culture and agressive/competetive traits are not the key to being successful here like in a more competetive environment.
I would hazard to speculate that those who stay AND do not have a Korean significant other to keep them chained here probably make better use of their interpersonal skills than those who are constantly tipping from one battle to the next.
just my humble opinion. |

yeah, active socially, active people in general, becoming a part of the community by mastering the language, or developing hobbies, or taking the initiative to plan trips, parties and other active pursuits
passive people tend to get eaten up by Korea, either putting up with crap and becoming depressed or else getting battered emotionally, sitting on a bar stool crying into their beer and doing a runner or else marrying a Korean and complaining incessantly about what they're putting up with |

No one respects a pushover.Time put in doesn't equate to anything here either.
On the other hand, you could bash Koreans over the head with what you consider to be the way to do things and you wouldn't get anywhere.
Work is work. You get out of it what you put in.If that spills into your time outside work and colours it unnecceasrily, you need to exercise some volition.
We're not forced into our jobs here-quite the opposite.
I don't know.......I've been dicked around at school of late.I could freely quit but that wouldn't get me anywhere and the people I'd most want to feel uncomfortable in admin, well,it would hardly affect them. |

Or maybe the people that stay just have a really good life with a good job and lots of vacation. Unlike the troll baiting OP. |

How long have you been here to have this all figured out? Such profound genius. |

Beyond just the fact that that generalization is a horrible way to judge a large section of people, I can think of other reasons. People who have good jobs tend to stay awhile. Surprisingly enough, there are a lot of good jobs here, but you don't hear about them here as people here mostly just complain (not all ofcourse). Or just people who marry a Korean. etc etc etc... |

Part-time jobs I've had there was no check of my F2 status.
Is the tax dept. connected to Immi?Doubtful.
Married or not,if you do extra work you have to work. The money doesn't come from nowhere.
I can understand the original idea though I think. There can be a tendency to just sit still, wait for the holiday, wait for the bonus, become ensconced, don't rock the boat, don't complain at being pushed into the margins...
That's pretty passive and it can be a nasty trap. |
