do recruiters need to know if you have signed up with other recruiters? Will it make them work harder or slim your chances down on opportunities?

I would tell them right off and play them off of each other. They are competing to place you first. If they aren't giving you jobs you want, say "you know, my other recruiter showed me a great job this morning. do you have anything similar?" Its just like any other negotiation.
