I dread my own birthday, I'm a year older and on top of that, I have to deal with people constantly asking me what I want as a present and I don't really want presents.

I've found out that parents really don't like the answer of "Don't worry, you don't have to get me anything, if I want something, I'll go buy it myself."

yeah,i dont want presents either. now when people ask, i always say "socks." you really cant have too many socks, and even if you do, they're an easy thing to donate/give away.

Today is my birthday and I've both very much looked forward to it (fresh start) and could never fathom dreading one. Hitting a decade marker just makes it so much the better.

Happy belated birthday! I hope your birthday was memorable (in a good way).

i love saying that im 31... and i really love it when people respond, "NO WAY!"

like that's soooo old!! haHahaHaaHa. who's so surprised? bet theyre no older than 31 themselves.

i was getting carded well into my 30s. in fact, the last time was when i was 36. a few months after November, 2000 when i was asked by the 80 year old woman at the voting center if it was my "first time" (tee-hee, it was my 5th). it's all relative.

i've done 25 (quarter century) 30, and 40 and i cannot recall ever dreaded any of them, i'm dreading 50 though; although i guess, by the time i get there i'll prolly have gotten used to the idea.

I got proofed New Year's Eve the year I turned 40! (Bless you, my child! Laughing )

In NY State now, they proof EVERYONE. Kind of funny when my 82 year old mom gets proofed by a 16 year old supermarket clerk!

The only effect birthdays have on us is to increase by one year the age-range of women we might want to do.

Beautifully put, yes??

Yes indeed. Laughing

in my case, the person asking for ID (on my birthday no less) was several years older than i. the point i was making was that although we may feel old at 30 or 40, to most people who are older still, we're young.

I feel sorry for those who feel old at 30 or 40...or even 50 or 60. My mom is in her 80's and doesn't feel (or act!) old. She still shovels snow, rakes leaves, and does most of her own household repairs. I get my attitude from her. EVERY DAY is a gift. You might get hit by a bus tomorrow or your building might collapse tonight...enjoy your life and make the most of it!

My aunt, on the other hand (2 years older than my mom and lives in a "retirement communtiy") is constantly complaining about how old she feels and about her aches and pains. I think a lot of it has to do with

a) how we see ourselves
b) how others around us see us

My mom spends much of her time with people younger than herself, while my aunt spends time with people who are only around her age. Having a broad perspective and good MENTAL health is good for your PHYSICAL health and keeps you mentally alert.
