I've been using it for a few months now. The call quality is decent but not excellent. However, its only like 2 cents a minute to call the US from Korea so I can't complain.
The only thing you need is a computer, internet access, and a microphone. I just went out and bought a headset because its just easier to use that.
There are probably better services out there for VOIP, but Skype is user friendly. Also, you just need to download skype to use it. No hardware boxes or anything.
They accept paypal, and you can just refill your balance with $10 increments. Each call is only a couple pennies a minute so $10 will go a long way. |

Besides, just get a calling card. It costs about 50W/minute to North America. You don't have to buy special equipment or setup software or leave your PC on. Most importantly you can use it from your regular phone and it is phone quality...unlike skype. Just dial and go!
just my 2 cents. Skype could be good for certain people in certain situations. |

how about this situation: friend, dad, sister and I all chat by SKype at the same time on a conference call in three countries. As everyone is on a pc it's completely free. Calling card shmalling card... |

yeah, I'm no Skype salesman, but it works for me.. got voice messages, call forwarding, that kind of stuff..
plus with Skype In, people can just dial a local number where they are and get me, at no cost to them.. makes people think I'm still back in my home country and just avoiding them out in public!! |

skype call quality is determined by your connection. most connections in seoul being fast the quality is pristene. Another plus is when you dont have a phone.. |

Not to mention that all those calling cards also use VoIP technology, so if network is congested quality is shitty. So... |

ok I'm pwnd!
I just think the calling card is pretty easy, is all and I've never had any of the delay (CB-talk) problem a lot of people on Voip have complained about.
I do like the Skype-in stuff, though. Lots of good features for the computer literate.
However, for a foreigner doing a year in Korea (with PC illiterate parents) a calling card is the bomb. Easy, no setup, cheap and hassle-free. |

hahha, I thought about that as soon as I posted it. "Sounds like I'm a Skype rep".
What I really like about the skype is that I can open up my Outlook contacts, and when I launch skype, I can see all my outlook contact phone numbers on there. on top of that, I can send text messages.
Some of my friends get a kick of waking up in the morning to get a text message from me in Korea.
Skype is just an alternative of communicating back home. Its really cheap and all you need is a computer/internet. Probably better stuff out there like phone cards and such. I just wanted to mention Skype for people that are interested. |
