I was just searching around on the Pastel Music site (www.pastelmusic.com) and came across this announcement. Go to that site and click on "Board". Its all in Hangul so I can't gather much from it except the date and lineup. They're playing with a band called World's End Girlfriend.. Haven't heard of them but they look interesting. Can anyone decipher the venue??

The show(s) last year at Rolling Hall in Hongdae were damn good!!!

현재 최고의 Post-Rock 그룹으로 평가 받는 모노(MONO)는 타카아키라 "타카" 고토(Takaakira "Taka" Goto:Guitar)와 요다(Yoda:Guitar), 여성 베이시스트인 타마키(Tamaki: Bass), 드러머 야스노리 타카다(Yasunori Takada:Drum)의 4명의 라인업으로 구성된 인스트루멘틀 밴드이다. 첫 정규앨범을 존 존(John Zorn)의 레이블인 짜딕(Tzadic)에서 발표했으며 이후 2003년 발표한 [One Step More, You Die]와 2004년 작 [Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined]로 전세계 포스트록계를 평정하다 시피 한다. 영원한 인디록의 역사 Pixies와 불멸의 얼터너티브 그룹 Nirvana, 슬로코어의 알파요 오메가인 LOW의 사운드 엔지니어이자 프로듀서로 유명한 스티브 알비니(Steve Albini)가 엔지니어링을 담당한 2006년작 [You Are There]의 장엄한 공간감이 주는 감동으로 현재 가장 중요한 포스트-록 밴드로 입지를 굳힌다. 이후 익스플로전 인더 스카이(Explosion In The Sky), 킨스키(Kinski)를 비롯한 미국의 중요한 밴드들과 투어를 다니며 성공적인 미국 진출을 이루어 냈다.


World's End Girlfriend
2000년에 발표한 [sky short story e.p.]와 정규 앨범 [Ending Story]으로 데뷔한 월즈 엔드 걸프렌드(World's End Girlfriend)는 압도적인 세계관과 클래식, 엠비언트, 클럽 사운드 등의 여러가지 요소를 혼합 시켜 IDM, 포스트락 리스너들 사이에서 화제가 된다. 2001년 발표한 [farewell kingdom]앨범 부터 인지도를 얻기 시작하며, 2002년 바르셀로나에서 열렸던 음악제전[Sonar]에 참가하면서 이름을 날렸다. 2003년에는 일본 인기 아이돌 그룹이었던 SPEED의 전 멤버인 Hiro의 싱글에 리믹스 트랙을 담당하면서 메인스트림에 진출하게 되고 타이페이, 홍콩 등의 동아시아를 중심으로 성공적인 투어를 마친다. 2006년에는 일본 포스트락 씬의 대표주자인 모노(MONO)와의 콜라보레이션 작품 [Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain]을 발표하면서 포스트락 팬들의 지지를 한 몸에 받게 되며 이들은 조인트 투어를 시작하게 된다. 마치 Aphex Twin을 연상시키는 기괴하고 정감 있는 IDM 사운드부터 포스트록, 현대음악을 아우르는 다양한 스펙트럼을 선보이며 음악 애호가들은 물론, 평론가들에게도 사랑 받고 있다.


불싸조 (Bullssazo)
포스트-락에 영향 받은듯한 펑크사운드를 들려주고 있는 한국출신의 3인조 개러지 노이즈락 밴드. 데이먼 앤 나오미(Damon & Naomi)와 하트필드(Hartfield), 그리고 리미티드 익스프레스(Limited Express)등의 내한공연에서 오프닝을 담당했으며, 제이디(Jay Dee A.K.A J Dilla)의 트리뷰트 트랙은 전세계 언더그라운드 힙합씬에서 회자되기도 했다.

Yeah the short Friday night set last year as part of the Pastel Music showcase was free.. Their headlining gig the next night (also at same venue) was 10,000 or 15,000.. Well worth it.

Hey, I can't seem to steal any of their music off the internet, and their webpage has no free samples. I like what Wikipedia says about them though--do they sound anything like 'godspeed you black emperor?'

Mono sounds like very heavy New Age music.
Vocaless musicsape songs that go on and on for 7 - 10 minutes build up and smoothen out.

I can say they're interesting. For me, less is more. I'd rather listen to intense 2 minute songs that intense 8 minute songs. I think Mono would be way better if they shortened their songs. Plus I get rather impatient with the slow build ups in the songs. "Come on already. Let's go!"

Still they're A LOT better than most of the bands that play in Korea, so if you haven't seen them, they're worth seeing at least once.

Right you are Sweet Pete, Godspeed YBE is a good comparison.. You could also liken them to Do Make Say Think or Mogwai. Actually Mono are one of the top bands in the world as far as that genre goes, and they tour extensively throughout Europe and NA every year. If you're into that experimental sound, you should check it out! It'll probably be your only chance to hear these kinda tunes in Korea for a long while.

I saw them last time and have pictures but not this time. What was the venue like anyway? How was the crowd?

The venue was a big room with thin thin carpeting on the floor and white panelling on the walls.. High high ceiling. Amazing sound. A room built for sound for certain, so great sound, but besides that it is a boring room. High end lights are set up though. It would probably hold about 600-800 capacity. There were about 300 people or so there -- definitely more than last time around at Rolling Hall. Less foreigners this time. Also the crowd stood for the whole Mono set, in contrast to last time where everyone was sitting even though the music was screaming for people to stand up. (then my friend actually did scream for everyone to stand up, and they did, last time). I've got a review to write up still, which I'll post when its done!
