i was only 9 years old when achtung baby came out.. a cool, older friend who had reached the grand old age of 12 played it to me and i loved it. my dad took me to see them play a year later, my first ever concert. U2 became the soundtrack to my early teenage years, along with a few others... but i hardly listen to them these days. despite the bull the music magazines come out with, i really think they've lost it since that time. bono's lyrics, which always were treading a fine line between inspiration and pomposity (but in kind of a good way before), have become almost cringeworthy. their music sounds like a band that is trying to be U2, rather than actually being U2. still, i love boy, unforgettable fire, and achtung baby even today.. those were really great records.

Live Under a Blood Red Sky is a classic. As are War, Boy and October.

That's the sound of being young and hungry as opposed to over inflated and pompous.

U2 are a band that I liked way more after seeing them live, compared to say the Chilli Peppers who were terrible both times I saw them and who i can't listen to any more.

I like the Joshua Tree the best, but I would not proclaim myself a U2 expert.

I am finding myself warming more and more to Bono. Seems like a nice guy trying to make a difference. I used to hate his guts, but then i used to hate any band who made more than say 4 albums.

Prove it.

At least you said sorry...it's a step in the right direction.

Since you are so informed, please settle the age-old aesthetic debate over "good" art, would you, and do try to be as curt and vague as you have been up to now. I'm sure the philosophical community would be thankful for your insight. Please refrain from plagiarizing Dimebag Daryl in your research, although he was a fountain of knowledge on the subject.

1. bubblebutt dude who is interesting when he isn't trying to make musical sounds with his mouth and who should stick to activism.

2. mediocre rhythm section.

3. guitarist who everyone lauds as being "innovative" but don't realize he's a fucking hack who just plays with effects pedals and sometimes gets lucky enough to build a pop hook with them.

4. songs that are so pompous, self-important and boring you want to stick a knife in your eye

"bullet the blue sky" - "new year's day" - "still haven't found what i'm looking for" etc. ad nauseum

- or - so annoying and ubiquitous that you want to stick a knife in your eye

"beautiful day", "the fly", "with or without you", "one", "pride (in the name of love"

there's my research. they're just not a good band, and the world kisses their asses. i am sure there is a way to prove it scientifically as well but i'm not a scientist.

I hate U2. Always have. I could never distinguish between their songs because they all sound the same. It's one thing for a band to have a 'sound' that's unique to them, but seriously, I can't tell their songs apart. Whenever they come on the radio, I switch channel. Bleugh! I have always been mystified by their success. The only thing I hate worse than U2 is Bono and his freakin' God complex.

So, you basically admit to being an idiot. can't tell the songs apart? Whats your IQ? Moron range or worse? Because you would literally have to have a brain of mush and 2 useless ears not to be able to tell different songs apart.

To answer your questions... yup, uh-huh, probably zero, worse, and yes to brain of mush and 2 useless ears (and they're kinda big, too!) Razz

I made the mistake of playing "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" to my advanced students.

WARNING: U2 is seriously uncool these days.

Compared to what?

After enduring gooey K-pop, Back Street Boys and Brittney, I finally snapped when my old high school class tried to tell me Stryper were sheet hot.

Hot or Not?

I don't know. There are very few bands who can change their sound, reinvent themselves, and come back full circle. U2 have done that. Granted, some of their stuff is a little mundane............but, the original question concerned Achtung Baby vs The Joshua Tree.

I see nothing wrong with playing some U2 at the bar.......ESPECIALLY a Korean bar. I love it when they squirm, and give weird looks. I can see the thoughts in their heads.............

"What is this? I am not hearing crappy, pre-packaged K-Pop that we love so much, but nobody in the world gives a phuck about".

cheers.

Edge invented most of the uses of effects. He is one of the most copied guitarists ever. I find it impossible to believe that Edge has gotten lucky for over 25 years.

What bands do you like?
