I am thinking about moving to Halifax when I am finished here in Korea.
Who can tell me ANYTHING about teaching (job market; students etc..) in that area?
thanks |

they speak English!
but really... I've lived there, where are you from?
It is easier to get a job in the countryside of NS.
You could also buy a nice old house for about 30000 in the countryside. |

| Great place to live. Not sure about the job market at this time. You night find that to be a wee difficult. |

i'm from alberta...
I'm sure rural jobs are a breeze....and the houses....my goodness.
I saw the most amazing house in some place called Fall River for only 160,000. Same house/location in edmonton? NO LESS than 700,000gs. |

| Halifax is a great place to live. Teaching jobs are hard to find there because so many teachers from around the province want to relocate to Halifax. You will probably have to work as a sub for awhile, get some kind of term position, and then go from there. |

| I lived there for 10 years, and really wouldn't have left if the job market hadn't been so bad. Lovely city, great people, lots to do (for such a small city), but hard to make a living. Lots of contract positions, not much that's stable. It's worth checking out, though. |

| We're hoping to stay on the fringe of town for a year or two then move into town. |

Why Halifax? Of all the places in the world.....
I'm from there...the only thing I find appealing is that it'll be tropical when global warming really hits.....
Job market sucks...so does the weather.... |

How IS the weather?
I'm from edmonton and a cold winter is of no concern to me.
What about the summer? Hovering around mid 20s? Because I can deal with that. |

Personally, I love Halifax and would love to live there again someday.
It's a small city that thinks big. Good music and art scene, good pubs, beaches in the summer. It's one of the oldest cities in Canada so there is a lot of history and colonial architecture. The old architecture, dark streets, thick fogs, smells of sea-salt, sounds of foghorns; the city has an eerily romantic feel about it. It's a great walking city. I used to walk for hours and hours sometimes.
The weather in the winter can be a bit harsh. It's long, cold, and wet, but it's rarely consistent. Depending on the year, you can be dumped with a lot of snow (not lately though), but the snow rarely stays. Edmonton is colder, but unlike Alberta, Halifax is a very wet cold that you can feel in your bones somedays. Not a great place to be if you have arthritis. |

| I like this kind of place, sorta like being in Europe. Very pleasant. Just that career opportunity lacks in the places like this with very matured economies for younger professionals of many jacks of trades. Typical of North America and western Europe, highly matured economies. Korea (and largely Asia and South America) is still developing, don't expect it to be red hot forever like it is now. Enjoy it while it lasts...There will, however, be more markets to be flown to though such as in other parts of Asia and maybe south of the mexican/USA border too in a day where adequate pay is realized to make it doable. |
