|
|
| Anybody have any friends back home that are perfectly well educated, have lots of student debt and have graduated with a masters or something better but still don't know exactly what they want to do but yet won't listen when you suggest a year or two in Korea? People that insist on staying at an entry-level office job that they don't really like that much (you know they'll switch jobs in a year or two anyway because being a manager at this company is the last thing they want), pay about $700 a month in rent and thus never get that much saved up because of all the loans, but for some reason don't ever listen when you tell them that if they wanted to they could be paying $0 rent and make the same salary but with much less tax starting the week after next if they wanted? Anybody managed to convince someone of this nature to come to Korea? |

I've tried and failed numerous times to convince old university buddies to give Korea a try. All of them simply don't want to leave the familiarity of 'The West'.
If a person simply doesn't have any sense of adventure then there's just no way around it. Regardless of how hum-drum life can get once you've settled in here, taking that first big step into the unknown is pretty huge for most people. For most of my NZ friends, moving to the UK is exciting enough... |

Why, that's easy, Mith Man.
Tell them that they will nearly be in the presence of some of the great thinkers of our age: igotthisguitar, EFLtrainer, regicide, twg, Octavius Hite, Rteacher, mindmetoo, Adventurer, freethought, on the other hand, jejujitsu, nowhere man, huffdaddy, hollywoodaction, gang ah jee, and twg. Never have so many insightful and incisive minds gathered in one online forum since ddeubel browsed here alone.
Just the thought of it will send shivers down their spines. Why even Michael Moore is thinking of making a documentary on location in Korea to get this brilliant assortment of minds to advise him on his next project. |

Convince them....why...do I want them to take money out of my pockets???? Besides the people I know back home would totally rape this place. Exploit every possible scenario in making the most money and screwing over the system......
Hey Steve....where was I in that list....I thought you loved me???? |

| If they come here and they absolutely hate it, they'll have you to thank. |

i convinced a friend of mine to come here, set her up with a job at my previous hogwan, and she pulled a runner after about 2 weeks. it was a great place to work, she was clearly not cut out for the expat-in-korea lifestyle.
i would try to convince someone to come here, but never again will i recommend someone to an employer.

I had a friend come over for a while. I was gonna set him up with gigs, but then elected not to for a few reasons. Just supported him for a month while he hung out.
I wouldn't "convince" anyone to come here. Just give them the straight-dope, then let them make up their own mind as to what they wanna do. |

But seriously, tell them Koreans make unique pizza, different from what they can find anywhere else.
(tip: do not, however, mention the word 'corn') |

Yeah, tell them that the supermarkets are full of juicy T-bones and every flavor of potato chip. |
