Fair enough.
About your question, 'is the war on terror a mistake'. Well, I would say that it is an illusion. If 'terror' were being fought, there would be tanks in Saudi.
But more to the point, terrorism is a global problem. More precisely, it is a global problem with muslims, as in, wherever they are in significant numbers there is a darn good chance of terrorism. The way to properly stop them is with smart police work and seriously limited immigration of muslim people. Not invading Iraq.
But I assume we wildly disagree. |

Saudi Arabia listens to American concerns and demands more often than not. Neither Saddam nor the Taliban did. Why invade Saudi when you can invade its neighbor and scare it into compliance?

This is compelling, particularly what you say about smart police work. But while Bush screwed the pooch, it was never an easy neighborhood to manage to begin with. |

Well when oil prices are as high as they are now, Saudi doesn't have to listen as much to the USA.
All Puffed Up and Stalling Reform
| Quote: |
Why the newly confident Al Sauds ignore America and glare at Iran
BY AN unnamed law of political economy, the pace of change in Saudi Arabia is governed by the price of oil. When it falls, economic growth slows and political reform accelerates as the kingdom's nervous rulers cede powers to their testy subjects. The reverse happens when oil prices rise. Business booms but fatter wallets make citizens complacent and swell the Al Saud family's status. Reform stalls. |
