| No, not "Hi Ya" but "hee yah". What exactly does it mean in English? I'm guessing "you're annoying me"? Have heard my Korean co-teachers effectively use it a few times, & have followed suit. Works like a charm. |

^ it's more like "eeeh-ya~", isn't it?
in that case it means "wow~"
it's not a word, more like a sound. |

My webster is lacking, then. I keep looking for 'booya' and I just can't find it...also 'hooray', 'yeeha' and 'badoomtcha'. |

A 'word' is a sign that is made of of two parts, the signified (sound/image) and signifier (the word itself). Since expressions like "whoah" and "fshizzle" can be recognized more for their phatic value than as signifiers for a specific sound/image I suggest "wow" is not a word but a meaningful utterance.
That said, since the nature of the relationship between sound/image and signifier is arbitrary, if someone such as novernae was to decide that "wow" means "goat" that person would only need general consensus to make it so. And then "wow" would be a word and I suspect that the object represented by the signifier "wow feta" would be popular on pizza with artichoke hearts and sundried tomatoes.

Hard to argue with that - so I'm just gonna take my Saussure and go home. You and your Webster can have the playground for your every-utterance-is-a-word pleasure. Nyyyyyah.... |
