Workers, come home -- a message from B.C.

Victoria will launch a campaign to attract help from across Canada
Michael Kane, Vancouver Sun; Canadian Press
Published: Saturday, March 10, 2007

Calling all absent British Columbians, it's time to come home and share the good times.

That's the message going out across Canada in the wake of Friday's news that B.C.'s unemployment rate fell to a new 30-year low of 4.0 per cent in February.

With employers struggling to fill vacancies, Colin Hansen, minister of economic development, announced the provincial government will be launching a campaign to attract workers from other parts of Canada.

4% is what a lot of economists refer to as "full employment". Basically anyone who wants a job can have a job. The reason full employment is not defined as 0%, there will always be about 3-4% of the population that actually avoids working. They show up in the stats but they avoid taking offered jobs.

But do many people have the jobs they desire or are educated for?

Joblessness is done across most of the country. Halifax has the lowest unemployment rate of any city east of Saskatchewan, now that's wild.

Me, I'm going to continue saving my beans and wait for a recession then I'm going back and buying up property for cheap.

Didn't Newfoundland recently balance its budget and realize a budget surplus? What is happening to Canada?

First balanced budget/surplus since Newfoundland joined confederation. Canada is where its at, in terms of government management.

I would like to see a shift towards a better national health plan.

If I may toss out an idea:

In terms of healthcare one of the best things that should be done is every province should be forced to start a health fund where they will deposit money and use 50% of the interest/income every year for healthcare (similiar to millenium college fund and EI fund), the other 50% will be reinvested in the fund. The feds should offer to throw in 50 cents for every dollar the province contributes. The province should never be allowed to touch the balance. Its a longterm solution but a good one i think.

And they should legalize, sell and tax pot, hash, mushrooms, MDMA and LSD.

Not a bad idea Octavius. I'd say take a look at France as well. Model is reported as the best in the world.

As for the pot thing, no selling in my opinion. Simple possesion under a certain amount. The choice to grow, or pick and harsh penalties for distribution.

Well, if you want to stop people from doing drugs, just have the government run it. They f@$k everything up!
