I'm teaching a 13 year-old girl one-on-one who's pretty high level. We have a book but it's only good for about 20-25 minutes of a 50 minute class and it doesn't give any chances for conversation. This is a part of my job, not a private, so I do have to do the book every day.
She's kind of shy and I don't think me being a guy makes her any more comfortable. But she's got the English skills to have a real conversation. So I'm looking for a conversation activity that's good for 20-25 minutes. The ideas I have now are:
- Roll a dice and whatever number you get, you have to add that many words to a story. Each time you add words you have to try to tell the whole story again first. Would work the same with a deck of cards.
- Find some strange (obviously G-rated) photos and have her come up with an explanation for them.
- One person describes a picture so the other person can draw it (the person describing is the only one who can see the picture).
Other ideas? |

What about the "true stories" series?
Read a story, discuss it, new vocabulary etc.
Great stories and my kids really liked them. |

I liked the What a World reading series when I did one-on-one with a 13 yr. old boy who had lived in America for a year. They read a story about another part of the world and then it has great discussion questions and you can throw in your own. Warms them up and then you can just take it from there. |
