|
|
I currently hold a B/S, a teaching certificate, and master's degree in teaching. I really want to move away from working at a Hakwon to gain some experience of higher education, possibly get better pay, and some more holiday time. Does anyone know the best way of going about this? I have not been here for that long. Websites? Phone numbers? University's that hire?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! |

Your timing is off, that's all. You missed the prime hiring time for those jobs by a few months. Another will come up in a few more months. You're well-qualified.
I have taught both high school and uni jobs. The high school job was the most fun, but became boring, and I felt like I wasn't improving myself much. You also do a lot of sitting around (which can be a good thing or a boring thing). I stayed for 2 years, and would still be there if the gov't hadn't come in and cut the contract vacation down from 3 1/2 months to 10 days.
That high school has asked me back 3 times in the past three months. When I visited last week, they wanted all of my recent contact information, and tried to all but sign me up for next year already -- and they just hired a new teacher. I have many friends there, and it's a damn shame Kyonngi screwed it all up for us with the vacation thing.
The uni job is better experience, but more work by a long shot. I also have a better (meaning bigger -- not newer) apartment, and a nice office.
You can walk into a high school job easily. Try it for a year, gain some more experience, and move up to a uni. If you're going to make any mistakes (which you are probably less likely to, given your experience) it's good to make them at a high school.
As for base pay, I worked A LOT less for my base at the high school. I was teaching 16 to 18 hours, but I hear it's more common to work 22 or 23 hours per week now. The high school setting also provided more opportunity to teach privates, if you're into that (children of fellow teachers -- not your students). The uni often offers more extra legal OT opportunities. This can, of course, vary depending on the school. I am doing a lot of OT here this year, and wouldn't have much time for privates if they were legal. |

By the way, give www.korvia.com a try. They can help with some public school placement. I've known them for a long time. |

Get in contact with Rowan at www.esl-planet.com They will be able to set you up with a cool job. Don't know if they have any available now. |

Are you currently employed by a hagwon? If so, your biggest problem will be getting a letter of release. |

Try a google shearch for "Candian Connection" (BTW: you don't have to be Canadian).
You can teach Elementary, Middle, or High School.
Pay is good- with your experience 2.0-2.3.
20 classes a week (9-5)
Great paid vacation (in Jeollado- southern province).
Opportunity for overtime.
Just be careful you don't end up in the boonies.
They should be loking for teachers in August. |

thanks everyone!
do I absolutely need to get a letter of release? If the new school really wants me and doesn't care if I get one, is it really necessary? I have not been in Korea that long so I dont know much. Thanks for all your help! |
