I registered on their english site and wanted to buy something but as far as I can tell there is only one option to pay and that is "international payment" (foreign credit card, etc)
Is there a way to buy something off their site without the help of a Korean ? |

i don't know. i've never had this problem before, but now it does show up like that for me too. it is possible that it's too late to do bank transfers (although i thought it should be possible until midnight). i usually use the korean site but now both the korean site and the english site show up like that for me too - no option for domestic payment.

Thanks sash but I think they changed the rules because there isnt a domestic pay option for a foreigner on the english or korean site anymore

How utterly stupid of Gmarket. I'd been happily shopping there for quite a long time now, given it was all on the Korea-language side of the site, but it sure made it easy to get all the things I wanted but could never find. Heck, for the average 2,500 delivery fee it's a better deal than going to the store.
So last night I tried to place an order and saw that I could now longer transfer money from my account. WTF? Must be an error. So I tried again today. Same problem. Went over to the English language version of the site and read some FAQs and saw no mention of domestic bank transfer. WTF?!
Came here and confirmed what I suspected, they changed for the worse. What fools!
Of course, this just means that now you'll have to make an account with your girlfriend's name (or use her account if she already has one), and then when you go to pay, just type your bank account name. I was so happy to have *my own* account before, whatever. At least there's a workaround for their stupidity.
Oh, and I sent a complaint on the English-language version of their site. I recommend that others do so too. |

I bought something yesterday, but I paid the secretary the money, so I could get my convection oven. It is not good to have to rely on Koreans to much. They should allow foreigners more of an option in terms of buying things. I want to buy a certain table on-line and don't like relying on the secretary, but I may have to next week. You can find good things on G-Market. I only bought something from there, because that convection oven was selling for 95K won. It was cheaper than the E-Mart one that I can't find anymore which sold for 110K, and this one is even bigger and can bake a small turkey. You can't beat that. The secretary was kind of enough to help me order a certain table I like. I won't need to order anything on-line for a while.

Who worries about G Market with all the shopping venues in Seoul? Maybe if you live in the boonies I could understand. Don't be afraid to get out and about...hehehe |

I'd rather get out and do something FUN.
Plus, just where the heck else can you buy SOIL in Korea? And why the heck would I want to haul it home myself?
Other times I need something small, like an extra camera battery. I'd much rather spend 2,500 won on shipping than 1,600 won on bus fare and over an hour of my time for a roundtrip to Yongsan--where the price would be HIGHER.
Yup, Internet shopping prices are much lower than the prices at the retail stores. I've saved a lot of money shopping on the net. |

A bit of an update. I'm not sure if they made a slight change to their system or if I had a moment of clairity while reading through their very Konglisheee "Enlgish shop".
But--you can still do a domestic bank transfer, but it involves some hoops. You now have to deposit money before making a purchase. Then you have to wait "2-3 business days" for the money to show up in your account.
That's still lame. I'm assuming some foreigners made some purchases and then never paid for them, so Gmarket decided to ban all foreigners from making purchases and transferring the money after the fact. Of course it makes no sense to ban good consumers like me who've spent throusands of bucks there and paid for every damn thing within 24 hours. So I've pointed out that fact on their website to them. Keep complaining until they revise their policy.
I can understand requiring people to make a deposit beforehand for their first order, but requiring established customers like myself to stick to that rule is lame. Why not ALL Koreans as well? Eh?
I'm going to submit an email complaint EVERY DAY until they either delete my account or change their policy. If others join in on the campaign we'll probably get them to revise their busted policy. |

Foreigners who live in Korea and speak Korean can NOT use their domestic credit card on the Korean site?
I thought they could. That is inconvenient.

| Unfortnately complaining will probably do nothing. Foreigners aren't seen as "real" customers so why should they treat us like one. We are just seen as leaches who get paid because we have a white face (in most cases). |
