Last Friday i parked my car in front of Thunder Burger in Itaewon when suddenly a fat guy came running at me yelling that i had parked in his spot. At first i didn't understand what he was saying until my Korean date translated what he was saying. I didn't even see the guy or his car so the whole thing was a shock to me. As she was telling me what he was saying the guy started yelling "ship pal nom...ke se ki" and various other nasty words while raising his hand like he was about to punch me.
At this point i said screw this and i kept on walking to the Taco restaurant. |
You should've just moved your car at this point. You were parked in his spot, he was obviously crazy, yet you just walked away from him... and although what happened isn't your fault -- what'd you expect to happen? |

There are no designated parking spots in that area. There is no "his spot."
But ya, nice that so many people here have the ability to see into the future and know the causal effects of their actions all the time. At the time i thought i was showing a ton of restraint just walking away instead of fighting back or yelling back at the guy. And you conveniently missed the point where, after he attacked me, i went back to my car to move it (where at this point there were at least 5 other spots open but the guy refused to move his truck because he was way more interested in throwing punches and yelling at the top of his lungs about how all foreigners should die and leave Korea). |

KKB, I strongly suspect that were we to ask for a show of hands, you'd find many if not most of us here feel for you and thought you handled what sounds like an extraordinarily ugly and tricky situation quite well. Naturally there will always be a few nitpicking fault-finders, just as I'm sure even you might regret some things you did -- not because they weren't justified, but purely because they escalated the situation in ways and to a degree you certainly didn't want nor would most reasonable people even anticipate. Koreans screaming over parking spots and swearing a blue streak at random foreigners raises no eyebrows at all. That this one's a crowbar-wielding madman does.
Anyway, I'm glad you posted the incident here and glad Squat Toilet suggested you do. I consider it a public safety announcement.
Thunder Burger. That fvcker's out of control.

If he has not paid you the money, press charges. |
If the story is true, he'd be stupid not to press charges now. |

| Maybe in hollywood, the law isn't on our side here, it's just a sad fact, therefore a little jungle justice may be in order. What can you do when your hand is forced? thunder psycho has to learn somehow right? |

I will do my part. Will place phone order for 110 burger delivery to Yongsan High School. I think it's a grade-level party. Yeah, that's it.
(If anyone else is thinking along these lines, make sure to use a pay phone, not your cell) |

Why would you settle for 100,000 won? You should have made an official report. I can only speculate that you date was unwilling to take it that far. The police here will punish Koreans who attack foreigners. Those who argue that there is an inherent police bias usually fall into one of several categories. Firstly, they don't speak Korean. Secondly, the Korean who is translating for you is probably unwilling to go down the official avenue
(most Koreans don't). Thirdly, the person concerned has no experience in those situations and is paranoid. I have been in situations where I was attacked by Koreans and the police were excellent. They failed to catch one guy who attacked me for no reason (they made great efforts to, including driving me around the area in a police car trying to spot him). On another occasion the Korean police took a guy who attacked me to the police station and he was officially charged after they took my report. (the police witnessed it and vouched for me). |

Right, but it was in front of his place, and he was acting crazy -- It may or may not have been his spot, but why not just move it?

I didn't miss the point -- everything could've been avoided if you moved your car first.
Like I said, it's not your fault about what happened, but what else could you expect?
It's like if I walk through Harlem with a sign that says "I hate n*ggers" -- which is taking it to the extreme, but I can't expect to get out of there unharmed. |

That's not really a good analogy now is it? |

Haha, this is pathetic. What did he expect? Does anybody expect to get a beating and have their car smashed for parking in a public parking spot? |

Yeah exactly. It's like saying don't cross the street when the crosswalk's green because a 747 might plow into you.
Hindsight is 20/20, blah blah blah. |
