hello all -
I put my resume up on a couple of sites - & all of a sudden I'm being emailed by a torrent of recruiters - most with generic messages trying to entice me to come over - thing is, most of them are from hotmail, yahoo & gmail email account holders - now I'm thinking - are these professional / legit companies?? or single individuals working from their home pcs? it would seem foolish to sign up with one of them - what if I needed assistance? - anyone feel the same as me??

I think you do not understand what a recruiter is/does
AND
most Koreans use a portal like naver, hanmail etc for their e-mail and these often block e-mail from western webmail accounts so they have to use hotmail or yahoo to make sure that people like us can contact them.

If you ever get into the crap the recruiter is probably the last person in the world who will help you (I don't care what they say).

A recruiter is nothing more than a paid (by the employer) introduction between an employer and potential employee.

Most hakwons are getting desperate and will do/say anything to get a whilte face in the classroom. The recruiter will also lie through their teeth to place you in the hakwon that will pay the most to get you signed on.

You are nothing more than fresh meat in the system.

Recruiter: Mr hakwon director - please meet fresh meat.
fresh meat - please meet your know owner er school director.
mr hakwon owner - please pay me.
fresh meat - good luck - bye eee

Watch your own back, do your homework and check the school and contract out BEFORE you sign on the dotted line.

Don't trust just any recruiter. You can talk to them and get a list of schools, but don't sign anything with any school before you check the schools.
Check out the schools that the recruiters recommend by doing a "google" search, and by asking on this site. If ANY of the schools are blacklisted, then you're dealing with a bad recruiter. If the recruiter does ANYTHING that seems questionable to you or encourages you to break the law ("Everyone does it") then you're dealing with a crook.

Also, you can ask for their registration number. If they don't have one, cross them off the list immediately. It doesn't mean their honest if they have a registration number. But if they don't have one it means they are illegally recruiting teachers.

Well how many recruiters are actually legally allowed to recruit teachers here? Not many I'm guessing. And even if they gave you a number, how are you going to know whether they're for real or not? Take anything a recruiter says with a pinch of salt, even the more reputable ones like WorknPlay.

Probably less than 1%. still, asking for the registration number gives you a place to start. Just the fact that you KNOW about the registration numbers should freak them out. Wink

The registration number is only valid for recruiters who have an office in Korea.

Lots of them are based on other countries, do not have an office here and therefore will not have a Korean registration number.

Not sure why people would trust a recruiter that isn't based in Korea. I know many recruiters in Korea aren't trustworthy but you can say that about many recruiters in any industry and in any country. A recruiter who is legit isn't going to want to lie or they will get a bad rep and will soon be out of business.

Many people need to realize that the recruiters are often lied to or misinformed. My recruiter tried their best but the public school that I worked at couldn't understand the difference between the word "microwave," and "toaster oven."

Just because some halfwit didn't get his pudding pop, and decided to put a school on a "blacklist" five years ago doesn't necessarily mean a school is bad. It also doesn't mean a recruiter shouldn't be trusted. Things change all the time here. One day it's a galbi restaurant, one day it's kimbap.

Yes, there are a lot of crap schools that should be blacklisted. But telling people that "anyone who recruits for a blacklisted school shouldn't be trusted" is just wrong. I could blacklist any school for any reason. Therea are lot of maladjusted f-ckwits that cause their own problems here.

PS, never trust ANY recruiter..hehe...
