This is kind of a weird question but I'm curious. What's the job market like for foreign English teachers in the DPRK? Do they not even care about learning English? Are there any schools for that? Thanks.

The British Council has vacancies for working in the DPRK from time to time, but I think you have to be British in order to be considered.

They actually really do care about learning english. However, as a person, outside of your job, I think that you'd be somewhere between bored and heartbroken after a few weeks. Read Guy Delisle's "Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea" for what its' like to actually live and work there.

Don't you have to be kidnapped to be an English teacher in NK?

If you miss Western food now from time to time, can you imagine how you'll feel in North Korea?

Might be an effective weight loss plan though. Very Happy

Do they not even care?

General Kim Jong-Il has created a worker's utopia that is the envy of the world.

Of course he cares.

You think some Korean schools don't follow through on contracts in South Korea.... I can only imagine the North.

I think you have to teach 12 classes a day there. And they only pay for airfare to China. When you get to China, you're on your own.

Another problem is that if you're a really good teacher, they won't let you quit.

It would be easier to get a job as a proofreader up there, from what I hear. There are also volunteer organisations that send people up there. I know a Canadian who spent six months in Pyongyang and said it was the most remarkable time of his life. He even snagged a North Korean girlfriend.

You mean in general or just in North Korea?

This guy had to sneak around at night to see this girl. Luckily Pyongyang is pitch black at night. And also generally the top few floors of every building are deserted.

Yeah, my sister sent me a newspaper article from home about a NZ volunteer's account of teaching for 3months (maybe) in NK. I think he's a school teacher, but he taught English in NK.

There's that book "A Year in Pyeongyang" about a dude who was a proofreader there back in the 80s. He basically said that it was incredibly boring. I mean, rigid propaganda-filled societies are fascinating from the outside, but I imagine they'd be soul-crushingly stultifying after more than a few months.

I highly doubt anybody would be sneaking around at night. I'll bet there are police patrols everywhere. And if he did....I think he's be taking a big risk. Remember, this is a country that confiscates cameras if you take pictures they don't like.
