|

Hello everyone!
I am new to Dave's and joined because I plan on searching for a job in Korea soon. Any advice that you guys and gals can give me would be very much appreciated.
I am 27 Vietnamese-American male with a 4 year BA in History with some education classes and some volunteer work with middle school children. I would like to teach at a public school because the chances of getting screwed over seem less likely there but I would not be able to start until mid-end of May.
It seems like the odds are stacked against me since public school terms began in March and some posts have mentioned the fact that i am Asian would not bode well for me since employers would look for a stereotypical English speaker. I am still positive that I want to do it.
What are my chances of getting a Public School job in Mid-May?
Please share your thoughts. Thank you!
PS and yes I do plan on going through a recruiter out of convenience. |

Your chances of a mid May start in a public school are slim to none.
Having said that, the chance of a June recruitment for an August start is almost guarenteed if you wanted to wait.
The main government public school programs will do the bulk of their annual hiring in June and July for the August orientation and August 24 mid term semester start.
Skip the recruiter and go direct to the horse when you have your documents in order.

It depends on the school. Some places really just want to get an English teacher in the school. You might not get in Seoul but there are plenty of smaller cities that are in need of teachers. |

I thought Incheon usually hires teachers for a May 1st start date, so depending on the school you may ask them if they would be willing to wait a couple of weeks until you can make it over here. |

Last year, I was one of about 120 teachers on an orientation in mid-May. We all started in Gyeonggi-do in May. So im guessing there will be more than a few jobs up for grabs as i dont know anyone that is planning on re-signing(due to various factors). Try work n play or Netkorea |

Your chances are good if you want to work for Gyeonggi or Gepik. I started my contract at the end of May. There are many schools that want to hire a native teacher so go for it. Try NetKorea. BoL.

My contract in a public school (middle) expires on May 2nd, and I'm pretty sure the school will be looking for another foreign teacher. I'm on the GEPIK contract. |

I'm on GEPIK too. I got hired the day I turned my application with all the paperwork. They even had a list of schools and was like "Here are the ones available, pick a location you prefer or we can just pick one for you"
I picked Gimpo cuz it was near Seoul. |

You have a good chance to be hired in may. i was along with a lot of other people i know. Most provinces are constantly hiring as they haven't (and for some, never will) met their quotas for NEST's. |

Thank you everyone for your replies.
For the people on the GEPIK contracts and anyone else for that matter, what do you think of the GEPIK contract?
What is it like teaching at your school? Co-teaching? Other foreign teachers? Relationship with Korean teachers? |

I'm set to go with GEPIK and arrive in Korea the end of May. The contract looks pretty good except for the 300,000 won "deposit" they withhold for the first three months (900,000 won!).
From what I've read on this board you will get it back at the end of your contract, though obviously I'm not speaking from experience.
I also happen to know that Canadian Connections is hiring for this time frame in rural areas in Jeollanamdo. |

I've only been at my school for 2 weeks but everything has been quite good. Of course there are some teachers who just sit in the back of the class, but that just makes me more assertive in controlling the class. I don't expect much from some of the teachers, so it really depends on each individual school. The pay with public schools is lower, but there is more security. Do a search for GEPIK, there are a ton of threads on this very subject. |

He might have some difficulty, being Viet-American.
Many schools discriminate, but you can try. |

Public schools are not hogwans. They're certainly less concerned with appearance. |

I disagree.
They are Korean, and will still hire based on appearance. My former high school was this way. They didn't want to talk to a friend I had who wasn't white. Hagwons are worse, yes, but he will still have more difficulty. He can eventually get a job, however.
With that said, I work at a uni, and as I go to teach 9 hours of classes today (and I taught 9 yesterday) I feel like this uni is a hagwon. |
