If any of your live near a place where a lot of Chinese live (i.e. near most any area with a lot of construction or factory jobs) I'd highly recommend going to the local market and trying to pick up some "five star" (osong in Chinese) beer. Its not great by any means (tastes like of like Heineken) but it costs 1,500 won for 630 cc (i.e. cheaper than Korean beer) and isn't anywhere near as skunky or hangover inducing as Korean beer. Steer clear of the other Chinese beers those, they either have 3.5% alcohol or taste like Coors (or both).
Having cheap ass beer that doesn't taste quite as bad as Korean beer has really helped me maintain my sanity since I've move to where I am now... |

Do you live in Doksan, Guro, Incheon, or Siheung?
I make a point of going to Guro Digital Complex for Snow, Tsingtao, Harbin, 5 Star, and the other one who's name I can't recall at the moment. Scoring a foot long tuna with extra veggies from Subway for the beer helps, too.
Yeah, the 1, 500 won price tag is way cool, eh. |

| Chinese beer can sometimes be very hit and miss.. get one bottle, it's good, grab the next bottle (of the same kind) and it's awful.. don't know how they do that.. maybe it's the handling after it's made, or sitting on the shelf for 9 months |

There is a sizable Chinese community in Cheongju and I know a number of bolt-holes where I can pick up Tsingdao or Snow beer. There is also a restaurant that does Xinjiang or Western Chinese style lamb skewers. Tre cosmopolitan.  |

I live in Seongnam. I can get Tsingtao for 2,000 a big bottle which is the same as Korean beer, but I prefer the 5 Star...
Bleck. That stuff tastes like Coors.
The Harbin is OK.

Right next to my house is a place that has lamb skewers for 6,000  I love my neighborhood, especially since Koreans don't like living next to Chinese so I can rent a (small) two bedroom place for 300,000/month and commute into Seoul |

Whereabouts in Seongnam are you?
In Moran-went to the farmers market today,oh,the humanity.....-I could pick up Tsingtao for 2K each but looking for anju took my breath away.Giant frozen bundegi.Tried some other Chinese alcohol.Or maybe it was cough medecine.Vile.
Incidentally,anyone checked out the new English-themed pub "Mad Dog" beside the main Nonghyup bank at Moran Station?Used to be a sushi train,then an ice bar.Across from the Lotteria. |

I'm closest to Taepyong station, pretty close to Moran station. On the walk from Taepyong station to home I pass by three little Chinese stores so I don't need to go to the market in moran (although seeing all the dog meat for sale there is always fun). As far as bars go, I usually don't go to bars here but there's a few decent ones around Sujin station. Mad Dog is fairly mediocre... |

That's because North Korean beer is based on an English style of brewing - they actually imported an entire factory from England - whereas South Korean beer is based on commercial American beer. |

Yeah, that NK beer over at Gecko's was pretty damned good.
Also, saying that Korean beer is based on commercial American beer...even that's a joke. I'd take friggin' Old Style over any Korean beer. At least it doesn't give me the poops the next morning. |

I like Japanese beers. Saporo, Asahi are really good.
My heart is with German Weisbier. What I wouldn't give for a Erdinger or Franzikaner Heffeweizen. |

Real German weisbier is very nice and worth splurging on sometimes. I had some dark weisbier once and that was also very much worth drinking.
As far as Japanese beer goes I really don't think that Saporo is any better than, say, Heineken, (I'd put Asahi more on a level with Becks or slightly below, both very nice lagers) but costs more than the already overpriced imported European lagers. Its crazy to spend as much as Japanese beer costs here when there's better or equal quality European beer available that costs less. |
