Yes, as a foreigner, you can buy from Gmarket. Thus far, I have bought an MP3 player and a computer case. Everything arrived quickly and without a hitch. I paid using my credit card (from the States). I could have used paypal as well. It's no big deal and it isn't hard. Find what you need on the Korean site, then, once you find it and click on it, click on "ENGLISH" at the top right of the screen. Then, when the screen changes, on the right, you will see in English, "Item last looked at". Click on it and POOF! There it is in English. Click buy and go on your way.
Hint of advice,
make sure you have your address read to roll in Korean. Then, no problems from there. If you have it written in English, you will MOST DEFINITELY get a phone call from a Korean person asking you for the address.

Actually, the answer is also NO.
I have been using Gmarket solely in Korean for 6months and they removed that option. Even on the Korean site, foreigners can now only use their foreign credit cards or Paypal.

Why have you changed your payment policy for foreign account holders? I have made dozens of purchases on Gmarket, well over \1,000,000, and paid for each purchase in a timely fashion. But now Gmarket is requiring me to deposit money in my "G account" before I can make a purchase? That's ridiculous. Maybe you've have problems with other foreigners buying items and not paying for them, but you've NEVER had a problem with me. I'm a good customer, so why are you punishing me? Please re-enable my account so that I can make a purchase and then make a bank transfer from my Korean Bank. If I can't do that, I won't shop at Gmarket anymore. I'm not the only one that is angry with your new anti-foreigner policy. Many foreigners in Korea are complaining in on-line forums about your **MISTAKE**.

This is from Gmarket Customer Center.
Dear customer We are very sorry for the inconvenience. There is no change in using banking transfer service except for bank account to deposit your money. You can transfer your money by using bank transfer service of course. Please check G account when you place an order. Then you can see bank account to deposit moeny. After transfering exact amount, the order goes through automatically. If you have any other questions, please contact us anytime. Thank you.
After reading that reply it meant just about nothing to me. So I cracked open a bottle of wine and downed half of it then read the message again. Oh, now it makes sense. Korea: It's better with alcohol!
As a trial I selected to buy an mp3 player using my "g account", despite the fact my account is empty, and an advisory stating that I need to have money in the account to purchase. Lo and behold, the order went through. Then I went to cancel the order, providing this apt reason "testing new 'g account' payment under your stupid new policy."
I'm going to place a *real* order tonight as a test to see how long it takes them to process the transfer in my "g account", and then the subsequent shipping.
What I can't understand is why they've added this extra layer of retardation to the order process. Perhaps I need to finish the aforementioned bottle of wine for clairity. |

How is it that you guys are having this problem and I am not? If you don't have a Korean credit card, then use your international card or paypal. But, if you only have cash, well, then I can see how this problem may occur. |

Today I tried to order something from a telemarketer in Chicago and I got the shittiest service. Where do they get off telling me they wont except my Yen?? Farging iceholes. I don't even think they understand a word of German!

Why not allow a bank transfer? It makes no sense to me, because that's as good as sending cash immediately.
Unless I'm missing something, it just doesn't make any sense to remove the bank transfer option??
Does a local bank transfer give you some order of protection that a credit card doesn't? This is now a sort of escrow-type system, right? Is it something done for your protection? Do Koreans now have to do this? I know from a past buying experience that a seller could easily take money and run from a place like G-market. I haven't been screwed yet, but I did have one heck of a time when I ordered a fish tank online, and they broke 2 in-transit -- it was like prying teeth to get the order cancelled, and the delivery company tried to be sneaky and deliver it at an odd time because they knew it was broken, and wanted to leave it on my doorstep, claiming i wasn't home, and the broken tank was my fault -- not theirs. I'd think it would be common sense not to deliver such a thing by motorcycle. |
