Hi,
Any sites you can recommend for good, colourful flashcards for an elementary classroom?
Thanks,
Ken |

Ken,
The simplest way to make great flashcards is to print from a powerpoint presentation. Simply go to print preview and chose 6 slides per page on the drop down menu. Select the pages you want to print and you are set. Laminate.
You can also print larger sizes of the same cards for use in front of the class, for whole class demonstration of flash card games which they will play in their groups.
{I play the standard Go Fish using target language, Did you ....? for example BUT many others. Guessing games are the simplest to start. One student picks up a card and the other two/3 students guess. Did you....? The student who guesses correctly, gets the card and picks up another which students guess at}
I have many big presentations which you can use to teach your whole English program elementary to advanced. Use these for great flashcards.

Or click presentations on my site and find English for Everyone, Super Vocabulary and others..

PS. when you print, print double copies. Most flashcard games will require a double set of whatever group of cards (say Family), you are teaching. |

www.mes-english.com. This site is like a ready made class. Tons of flashcards that also have coordinating games, worksheets, etc for use. And the kids really like the illustrations.
Another I like is www.eslhq.com b/c you can custom make worksheets, flashcards, gameboards etc. |

I am guessing you are requiring flash cards for kids. Well the British Council website for Kids have loads of flashcards to print and make. All you have to do them is print them (colour them if your printer is not colour), stick them on card, and then laminate them. They are brilliant and have used them for pelminism games etc.

Hope it helps. |

I absolutely loathe DD's political views but I think he is probably a great teacher.
Thanks DD for the work on your site and your Teaching ethic.
Just don't teach my kids, lol |

Thanks for keeping that name Bukowski, a little more in the public eye. Reading him throughout the years has taught me more about how to teach than almost anything, believe it or not. For example, his great poem, The Genius.
saw,
It ain't work -- I love what I do (for the moment, until the next mountain) but thanks.
I keep the politics and religion and...... out of the classroom The best political message is being a good person, however that happens (for example Bukowski above...).
About flashcards. Once you get the students up to speed about how to play the games, you really don't need vast numbers/sets of cards. You really only need one set for each language structure / vocab. theme. Different groups can then all play, practicing different components of language. Really empowers the students to be learning in this fashion, seemingly independently.
But keep the discipline. I use a yellow / red card. Those ruining the games, joking etc.... get a yellow then red. On the red, it is to the time out area and selected political tortures...
