An interesting bit by the authors of Freakonomics. Although about the only thing offensive about life insurance today is the suit the sales guy is wearing, life insurance used to be considered an entirely repugnant idea.

Until the mid-19th century, life insurance was considered ''a profanation,'' as the sociologist Viviana Zelizer has written, ''which transformed the sacred event of death into a vulgar commodity.'' |
