Product.
I had my heart set on an AMD x2 5200+, wanting to try someting other than an Intel chip, but the more I read reviews, look at benchmarks, etc, the more the Intel chip that costs about the same (Intel e6400) looks like a better buy. |

Are people here blind or did they NOT see the prices AMD were charging for X2 processors before and after Intel Core 2 Duo was launched?
I've gone with AMD for the past 5 years because they were the price/performance kings. My first processor was a AMD XP 1800+, then I upgraded to 3200+ then to a X2 3800+ (Which I paid almost $400 for because Core 2 Duo wasn't out yet).
The point is, Intel Core 2 Duo is the bomb. This processor forced AMD to slash their prices all across the board. Also, since the Core 2 Duo's outperform them on all benchmarks, AMD had to further lower their prices to even remain competitive.
Right now, the best bang for your buck is Intel Core 2 Duo. |

Not only are we all blind, but we haven't a clue what we are on about. Welcome! You should fit right in.

| Yeah, it looks like I'll be going with an Intel Duo. For now, I'll get one of those cheaper motherboards with an AGP slot for the moment since my graphics card is still doing fine (geforce 6600gt. Nothing to get excited about, but still does the trick). RAM, board, CPU. I figure I should be able to upgrade my system for about 300 000 won. |

You made a good decision my friend. BTW, the Core 2 Duos overclock like a champ. If you are into that kind of thing. |

How many percentages can I expect with a cheap motherboard? |

not a hell of a lot.. Motherboards that are cheap tend to not overclock..
I don't get it why people cheap out on the motherboard and not the cpu.. buy a cheaper CPU and a better motherboard and I guarantee you will get a better bang for your buck..
But with CEBIT just showing off upcoming products its not the right time to upgrade especially since Intel already anounced price cuts for april. |

But multi-core chips don't help the gamer. What will there be for the gamer? Gamers need high-clock speeds for one application (the game). Will there be a high clock speed gaming chip from either company? Or will we all have to multi-task all the time to get the worth out of our multi-cores?
.........poor gamers...... |
Clock speed alone does not judge the power of a CPU. THe Core-Duos with their lower clock speeds are more powerful than the Dual-Core line they replaced that was 1GHz faster.
Plus most of the new games that come out have support for multiple cores. Some like the Quake 4 engine (used in many games) or custom ones like Call of Duty 2 focus on making everything prettier (such as in helping older graphic cards with things like HDL), while other games like Galactic Civilization 2 uses a separate core just to handle more complicated AI.
And it's not just new games using multiple cores. Older games (like the aforementioned Quake 4 and CoD2) have been upgraded since their release to include support for multiple cores. |

Aren't the costs pretty much the same? Cost of a cheaper CPU more expensive MB = cost of a more expensive CPU and cheaper motherboard?
So, what would you recommend, then? |

More expensive motherboard gives you added benefits like additional USB ports, better audio, gigabit LAN, additional SATA, etc...etc...
Well, it all depends on the mobo chipset too. I prefer NVidia NForce because they are usually packed with extras. |

I've got a fancy soundcard (ac97 isn't great with ASIO). |

The Nforce2 boards, circa 2003 or so, had ASIO drivers, so long as the board was equipped with an MCP-T southbridge (sometimes labelled 'Soundstorm'). I have one of those boards, giving 2in-6out low latency performance that is quite a ways ahead of garden-variety ac97.
That said, I also have a fancy Korean Egosys/Audiotrak 2in-8out card with proper ASIO drivers that can get well below 5ms latency, but I can also get more or less the same thing, though with only two outs, on one of my laptops with its onboard ac97, used along with the way-better-than-it-should-be ASIO4ALL ASIO hack.
For ASIO on the cheap though, the venerable but maligned SB Live Value with very solid Russian KX ASIO drivers is king. Low latency, tons of digital ins and outs, 2in-4out, hot headphone output, MIDI/joystick jack onboard.. I've seen these at the used places in Yongsan for around 5000w. Like other ac97 compliant cards, it resamples everything to 48k - and not that well, allegedly - but for regular human purposes it still sounds damn good.

I find that pairing ASIO4ALL (excellent little software that I still use with my ASIO card as it greatly simplifies the device controls) and AC97 isn't good enough for my needs. For one, the sound quality wasn't consistent as the CPUs memory would quickly become maxed out. So, I got myself a soundcard loaded with ASIO drivers. I'm quite happy with it now.
(My card allows me to adjust to 16,22, 24, etc, way up to 192k.)
