When I lived in Cholla (97-99) both Korean Air and Asiana flew 3 or 4 times a day between Mokpo and Seoul. Now only Asiana flies this route, and only once a day. Can anyone explain why? These flights were usually full, so the drastic reduction in flights doesn't seem to make any sense. |

I have no idea, but maybe because of the KTX? |

Well, the Gwangju airport is right there. And, there's an airport in Yeosu which has flights to and from Seoul 8 times a day, so that siphons off traffic from the eastern side of the province. And I'd suspect another reason is that they're scaling back operations to prepare for Mokpo Airport's closure. They've been constructing an international airport in Muan, which will take the place of Mokpo Airport (and I think it'll replace Yeosu's, too). It was supposed to open in 2002, but as of yet they're still working on it. |
