Marriages cost an average of slightly over 90 million won ($77,675), the latest survey showed.
The Korea Consumer Protection Board (KCPB) said yesterday that newlyweds have spent an average of 90 million won on their marriage, with house purchase accounting for the largest chunk.
In a survey conducted by the KCPB, 418 couples who have been married less than two years in Seoul and Pusan answered they have spent at least 62 million won on home ownership expenses, followed by 18 million won on furniture and electronic home appliances and 10 million won on the wedding reception and honeymoon.

I have always found it interesting how they include the cost of an apartment into the figures. I have always been a bit jelious at how Korean parents pay for this too. Marriage would be a lot more easy in the West if parents paid out for a nice house somewhere. Lets see, then the average cost of a wedding in the States would be $250,000. |

Do Korean parents really pay for newly-wed's housing?
That's not my experience, nor the experience of others I've spoken to.
Recently, anyway... perhaps it's a historical tradition. |

I wish! But yes, some still do. Maybe even most, I have no idea. |

My missus' folks didn't - cost me a fortune
Having said that, they furnished the entire place as a wedding present |

From what I recall, the groom's family historically paid for a new place to live while the bride's family historically paid to furnish the new home. |

Believe about half do. The other half need not worry, for finance is so easy to come by in this country as long as you are Korean. If you have real job, most banks will finance your 'deposit money' for an apartment. The key here is a real job. Meaning with a company with some standing or with a government job. Yeah, the others I don't really know what they do. |

One of my friends is about to get married but her boyfriends family is really poor and they told her if you want to marry you must pay for our half as well, so she says she needs to save at least 40 million for the wedding, reception and presents for the grooms family(what the hell is this????) and she is stressed. The worst thing is he is a halfwit and I don't understand why she is marrying him as she obviously doesn't like him but she is now officially past ther marrying age so the pressure is on I suppose.
Also, i didn't know the Korean parents paid for the house. I have NO chance of this happening when i get married. |

It costs less than 100,000 won to get married at City Hall.
The rest is up to you and your spouse. |

My wife's folks, who are by no means rich, were kind enough to lend us 38mil, which we paid 10% interest on for a year. Then we paid it back in one lump sum. Good for everyone all around.
Other friends of mine were given substantial amounts of cash-ola on their wedding day (50mil plus). It depends on a lot of factors: financial situation of parents, relationship of parents to son-in-law (i.e. is it a good one, or do they hate your bloody guts?), where the newlyweds plan on living, etc. |
