I love it. However, I was told it was Mongolian in origin.

That's what I was told. Furthermore, 'shabu-shabu' means 'swish-swish' in Mongolia. swish-swish being the orthodox action of moving the meat around the broth to cook it evenly.

There's this great Japanese style shabu shabu chain that serves Japanse kimchi... the un-fermented stuff. Now that's good kimchi.

So it's not originally Korean?

It is great stuff. I know a buffet-style place in La Festa that is great and it's a chain. Here's the link to look for locations-

I was first introduced to shabu-shabu when I did my masters in Indonesia. Half of the guys I lived with into it. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I've since wanted to do it more.
Oh, 12 years in Korea and my first post here, so hello to all you newbies.
From what I've heard, shabu-shabu is a Japanese onomatopoeic term for the sound meat makes when it is dipped in boiling water.
One Korean term for shabu-shabu is 휘라폰, the best stuff is in the port cities.[/b]

i was told that shabu-shabu was the reason why mongolian troops were so well-fed and ready to fight - they cooked on the fly and with scavenged local ingredients.

everything i've been told points toward mongolia.

that said, the jung song shabu suki restaurants here are delicious and the final addition of noodles always reminds me of campbell's chunky soup.

Shabu-shabu is amazing in my opinion. (:

I was on vacation in Korea a couple years back and randomly tried it with some relatives. I loved it so much that I went back a couple times. It's just so darn tasty.

Its high on my list of dishes I will cook for myself once I head back state side. I love the fried rice portion of the meal. Kudos to whoever came up with it.

When you're in Tokyo the next time, or even Taipei, check out Mo Mo Shabu Shabu Ya.

Mo Mo is the best shabu shabu I've had.

All you can eat for a set price!

Shinjuku - West Exit, across from Odakyu Department Store.

Taipei - Zhong Xiao East Road, across from Bockbuster Video.

You can also get sukiyaki.

Aye, I love the stuff. It's not something I would make a staple of my diet, but I certainly enjoy it on occasion. Smile

Yeah that's the good stuff.

A lot of places serve the Japanese version of it which has a kind of thin and watery brother, other places have a more Korean spin on it and it has a much thicker, tastier and spicy broth.

One of my favorites. Yum.
