I said a question about a valid drivers license because I've known quite a few people that came to Korea to "kill time" while waiting for thier suspension to pass. It's a trick I used in Canada when you're limited on the questions you can ask in an interview.

Can't believe someone would call Captain Corea an idiot. Or even 'that poster', for that matter. Fwiw, I think your idea makes sense. Having a driver's license is a basic act of responsibility. I knew a few people back home who waited around til they were like 19 or 20 to get a license. Trust me, those folks are still sleeping on their parents' sofa, or hopping from friend's house to friend's house.

Now, about that thread.. it wasn't really all that caustic, at least not the first page. The one dude, catinmyfridge, did Korea a huge disservice by suggesting that people only come to Korea as a last resort. He's insinuating that there's no other valid reason to want to come to Korea. Kinda self-defeating, I would think..

Well, my friend is in his 30's and just got one. He always lived, worked, and studied downtown, and never needed a car.

He's a university professor.

as far as i know most civilized countries offer a standard ID card that serves all the functions of a driver's license except allowing you the privilege of driving a car. you can vote, buy beer, participate in court proceedings, get married, apply for banking services, get a credit card.

i'm not certain how being legally able to drive makes you awesome. please inform.

A driver's license? Is that all these clowns can find to complain about? Ooo, so hagwon teachers need a drivers license now? I didn't know their job description involved driving the kids to and from the school. I thought hagwons had bus drivers for that.

I agree. Turning someone down because of no drivers liscence is absurd. I don't have a drivers license, because I don't want to drive. Never even applied for one, I just use busses and subway. So you'd not give me a job because I had no drivers license? Natzi.

Meh.....I've never had a drivers license, probably never will get one. Not all of us come from some village in Canada with a population of 7 people y'know.

With two older brothers, I never had much of a chance of "getting the car" when I was a teenager, and they were more than happy to chauffeur me around if it meant that THEY could get the car.

In Uni, I lived in a metropolitan area with fabulous public transportation. If I could go my whole life without needing a car, that would be great... Looks like I'll need one if we have kids though..

Listen, you vankers are thinking with your heads up your asses. I don't think Captain Corea was suggesting a driver's license is the be all end all criterion, but it nonetheless can be an indicator.

I don't think anyone's suggesting that having, or not having, a driver's licence is a one stop background check, but CC was suggesting that having one indicates a degree of responsibility.

Other posters here have pointed out it doesn't indicate anything of the sort, and it's specious reasoning. At best it's a line of questioning that you can follow to delve into an applicant's background. Just why they don't have a licence?

Maybe that's what CC is getting at?

I've met plenty of people who don't have a licence, and have perfectly good reasons for this.
