For those who are into this kind of music... thought it would be nice to put up a thread for people to share some of the lesser-known artists.

I mentioned them on another thread. They're from Alberta but play a lot in the Kootenays. Great harmonies, very soulful music. Maybe a bit hard to get their music over here, though. There are a couple other bands with the same name, so mind what you're getting...

A transplanted Aussie living in Salmon Arm BC, Xavier plays digeridoo, guitar, and stomp-box - simultaneously. Great voice, emotionally-charged lyrics, fairly political, but what a talent. A buddy of mine saw him last year... said he's been to hundreds of concerts, but this one moved him to tears. Gave me a recording of it - fantastic.

Am I the only one around here who knows about this band? NOBODY I talk to has ever heard of them. Wide mix of sounds and influences; ska/reggae, zydeco, blugrass, country, blues, rock 'n' roll. Check out the double-disc Live at the American Ballroom concert CD.

Peter Case This guy is an amazing singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist. His first srlf-titled album is fantastic!! Comes out of a blues tradition and his lyrics paint rich stories of American individuals. He's amazing in concert and is a very down to earth person. Highly recommended.
T-Bone Burnett This Texan has been around for years and started in Bob Dylan's "Rolling Thunder Review" back in the mid-70s. He's well known as a producer, but is also one of the best songwriters out there. His album "Proof Through the Night" was critically aclaimed. His self-titled album is an awesome stripped-down folk album. One of the best there is!
Mark Heard The late great MH was probalby my own personal favorite songwriter. He died at the young age of 40. He sang about both issues of faith and the mundane but in a prophetic way that could touch your heart. A great singer that touched people on a profound level. I miss him terribly.
Victoria Williams Songs of innocence and love. Helping us to hug our inner-child and appreciate rich memories of a traditional home. Her lyrics are moving~ especially her video of "Crazy Mary" (that Pearl Jam" covered).
Bruce Cockburn A Canadian legacy that has been around for a very long time. Many different styles of music, but the bottom line is that this man can play the guitar!! His songwriting is phenomenal! One of the best voices of our time! |

Peter Breinholt I love him! All of my "25 Most Played Songs" on my iPod are his. He's not as heavy as most folk musicians and he likes to play around with instrumentation.
Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband Offshoot of Peter Breinholt's band "The Big Parade." They're a bit more country, but still very folksy.
The best part is, they're both on iTunes! I love iTunes.... |
