Why Phuket - it's a shit hole full of 50 year-old sex-tourists. Much better to jump on a boat when you arrive in phuket and check out Ko Lanta which is the next island along.

Sarcasm aside, it would most probably be cheaper to fly to bangkok and get an internal flight to phuket. That's why you're most probably getting quoted high ticket prices for the luxury of arriving in phuket.

Prices vary depending on when you want to go.

Top Travel is advertising airfares on Thai Air for 480,000 + tax
for this month to Phuket. Tax includes departure tax from Thailand now so the price should be close to 600,000 including all taxes, I would guess.

Sex crazed 50 year olds in Phuket or drug crazed, unwashed backpackers on the surrounding Islands. What would be worse? Stereotypes, that's what!

Get out of the tourist (and/or sex-tourist) centers and you will find a completely different kind of Phuket and Thailand. Those who think Patong is Phuket - are only showing their limited experience.

When are you going? If it's during a holiday season in Korea, then yeah --- expect to pay at least 800k.

And to echo what others have said -- stay out of Patong and get to the other nicer beaches.

the shoestring travel lady was great. i booked a one way ticket in July for $500, which seems to be ok. i was close to giving up and booking an $800 flight on expedia, so thanks. as for the phuket info, thanks to everyone. i am going to patong for a few days and then somewhere else for a few days. whats the best beach area on phuket?? i would like nice quiet beaches, but i don't want to totally be by myself. and a little bit of nightlife would be nice. thanks for any additional help.

She, she was very helpful when I booked with her. Will no doubt hit her up when I leave. Not literally..

I'll leave it to the diehard phuket peeps to advise you on your trip.

Don't rule out getting a boat to Ko Lanta. It's only 90 mins away.

I bought my ticket for late July for 600,000W. I got a round trip ticket to Singapore via Singapore Air and then a RT ticket to Phuket via Tiger Air. I'll be in Phuket for 5 days and Singapore for 4.
Korea-Singapore = 500,000W
Singapore-Phuket = 100,000

I booked this a month ago so I doubt you can get those kinds of prices again, but you may try. I know Tiger Air has a 2 for 1 sale going on now, and Asia Air always has special deals going on as well.

If you are a diver, check out Chalong Bay. There are a couple of nice bars right off the round-about, a few really cheap places to stay (check out Father's Bungalows down the road from the bars on the way to the pier) and a couple of nice places to eat. It's easy to explore the South end of the island from there if you rent a car.
