hi all,
i am 32 and want to come to korea for one year as of next month. i have several years teaching experience, TESOL cert, BA in MFLs: what can i expect to earn? i don't want too pessimistic an estimate nor an exaggerated one.
i have taught university, YLs, business - you name it. i am happy to do, say, 5 hrs OT per week. |

With those quals and if you can document the experience AND with 26-28 classes per week in a public school (4-6 hrs OT) you will earn about 3 mil before deductions + the usual benefits (airfare, housing, medical/pension, severance).
In a hakwon you are worth what you can negotiate for but typically a new to Korea teacher will get 2.0-2.2 mil + most of the other benefits and expect to be cheated out of medical/pension benefits. |

right, ta. i'm a little confused: will they expect me to have one year of "korea experience" or not? what can i expect to save if i am very mean and live frugally? where should i relocate to?
also:
where are the best places for job leads?
how long does it take to organise the necessary paperwork (such as a visa)? |

If you are not a party animal and don't eat a lot of imported food, have your housing included in your contract (standard for most) you can live comfortably on 500-700k. |

Depends on your salary and deductions.
For a single person working as a salaried employee and earning about 2 mil per month the taxes are about 1.7%.
If you work for a cheating hakwon you can expect up to 5% to be deducted and none of it sent to the tax man. |
