Czech village 'vetoes' US shield

In Trokavec, 71 of the 72 who voted said no to the radar station
The residents of a village in the Czech Republic have voted overwhelmingly to reject a radar station that would form part of the US missile defence shield.
Only one of the residents voted yes, while 71 of the 90 eligible voters were opposed, said the mayor of Trokavec, 70km (44 miles) from Prague.

Villagers fear the area will become a military target. The vote was largely symbolic and has no legal power.

The US plans the shield to prevent long-range missile attacks.

The programme has bases in the US, Britain and Greenland, and Washington wants more in Poland and the Czech Republic to complete the coverage.

The Czech government is in favour of the plan but needs the approval of parliament, where it has no majority.

Adventurer, you may have missed it But the Russian president, Vladmirir Putin, said any place that hosts the US missile shield components would be added to the target lists of Russian ICBMS

When? and Where? did Putin say this? Please post some reference.

Also, I don't think any Czechs would be afraid of Russian "targeting". They'd see it as a great moment to thumb their nose at their slavic brethren, given their "history". So I don't think that consideration had any play in the decision of the villagers. Most likely it had to do with being bullied by big wigs - that's all. Czech's have a good network of local civil disobedience which springs into actions on all occassions like the one in the article.

I don't believe it was Putin but the head of the Army or someone near the top of the Russian military that said that.

Putin made threats. What is the real tragedy is that the Eu, actually the so called Big Powers but in actuality we should call them Big Pussies: Germany and France sucking up to Putin. Russia should be ostricised by Europe. Russia is a hellhole, it always has been, and the way to deal with them is to stand up to them. The Czechs and Poles showed that they can stand up to Russia, the Germans have shown their inability to get their tongues out of the Russian anus.

I think it's more interesting that parts of the American military and some European countries have concluded there's nothing they can, or (supposedly) will do about Iran's nuclear program.

Quote:
Obering said that "if we start this year, we will not have the capability in place until 2011."

Any delay, he added, could make the United States and Europe vulnerable to possible attack from Iran.

"The consensus of most of the intelligence community," he said, "is that Iran is going to have something before 2015 that could threaten the United States or parts of Europe with a long- range, intermediate or intercontinental ballistic missile capability."

It is not that simple. Many people receive Russian energy. The U.S. government ignores many things Russia does, because it is convenient at the moment. There are many unpalatable things done in order to appease Putin who seems to be interested in focusing on someone being an enemy of the Kremlin. Europe does benefit by the U.S. monitoring Russia. I don't think U.S. troops should pull out of Europe.

Russia is the enemy and should still be regarded as such. It is a shame that Russia provides a lot of energy to Europe, it seems that the Germans in particular have sold their dignity, national backbone and EU loyalty to Putin for some gas. The real stupidity of this is that they are too blind to see that Russia will use gas and energy to bully anyone receiving it, and that it would be in their best interest, though perhaps more expensive, to get energy from elsewhere. because Russia has NOT changed. This is still the shithole that it was and it has never set aside its imperial dreams. Poland understands this, so do the Czechs. New Europe gets this, Old Europe lead by Germany hasnt got a clue. Thats why you see Germany siding with Moscow over their EU and NATO allies. Thats called being a whoooore.

Russian gas should be boycotted or atleast the amount imported should be sharply reduced. Russia is still the enemy, allowing them a voice in security matters is the height of idiocy.

Russia is evil, treat them as such

MOSCOW: Russia may target its missiles against Poland and the Czech republic if the U.S. sets up its missile defence shield planned in the two East European countries.

"If the Polish and Czech governments approve the decision [to deploy U.S. anti-missiles] our strategic missile forces will be able to target those missile sites," said Russian Strategic Missile Forces Commander Col. Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov said.

The commander told a press conference on Monday that Russia could quickly resume production of medium range missiles if Moscow decided to walk out of a Soviet-era treaty with the U.S. banning their deployment.

Russian General Staff Chief Col. Gen. Yuri Balyevsky said at the weekend that Moscow would pull out of the treaty is the U.S. went ahead with the deployment of missile defences in Europe
