In one of my company classes, we just got finished going through the world's richest people. The guys in the class were desperately trying to find out if their saviour from Samsung Lee Gun Hee (the richest guy in Korea) would be featured high on the list. It broke their hearts to find out that nutsack stain was only the world's 314th richest person. They thougt he would be at least top 20 material. So much for 대한민국's golden boy. A guy from Kazakhstan whooped his ass for christ sakes. |

Given the economic history of Korea, I think the guy is doing well. |

I don't mind where he stand on the list, my concern is he is suffering cancer right now. He came to Houston for treatment several years ago, I saw recently a picture of him in wheelchair when he arrives at Inchon Airport after he got some kind treatment in America.

poor buggers eh?
I feel sorry for them sometimes. My students got truly humbled when I did stats with them. Poor buggers found out for the first time in their lives that Korea has 8 universities in the world's top 500 (and Japan the only Asian country in the top 10) compared with...
1 United States: 168
2 Germany: 40
3 United Kingdom: 40
4 Japan: 34
5 Italy: 23
6 Canada: 23
7 France: 21
8 Australia: 14
9 Netherlands: 12
10 Sweden: 11 |

Do you mind PMing me where you can get the rankings and the stats. I've always wondered how "Seoul University" stacked up against schools in the US. |

It is surprising to see him ranked so low since Samsung, along with Hyundai, LG (&GS) and Lotte seemingly control 90% of the Korean economy. I would have expected him higher. |

He is a head of Samsung, but his brothers/sisters own much of Samsung stock and he already transfered his wealth to his children a long time ago.
One become TOO RICH is not a proud thing in korean society.
American society respect wealthy people, but in korea wealthy people don't get that kind respect, so they try not to be too wealthy |

What does that mean?? if anything
For one thing, the "grade" universities get is partly measured on alumni money.
If Korea doesn't have enough money to donate to her universities, is that their failing?
And it's great that when it comes to high school math, science and literacy,
that suddenly you no longer care about world rank!!
Because in that case Korea is almost always #1, or #2, despite having less money.
Yes, it's a completely different ball game comparing school to university, but for ME, school education is more important as it seems to have more impact on society and crime etc. For example Korea is far ahead of the US in terms of the overall quality of schooling. |

love hearing stories of Koreans getting smacked in the face with the reality, and knowing Korea is not the almighty country they believe it to be.... |

Does an academy actually count as schooling?
and define quality of schooling.. I know creative thinking is not one of the strong points here. |

I love that ish too. You should have seen their faces....as I kept going down the list....especially when they seen countries like india, kazakhstan, russia, thailand, and the phillipines have more high ranking billionaires than Korea does....countries and people they think are chicken feces compared to them. |
