|
|
I read through every single thread on this site and couldn't find any contact details for Samsung or any other credit card company. The numbers I did find here are all disconnected. I searched high and low on the web and coudln't find any English speaking services.
So if there is someone out there with new contact details for English service to any credit card issuing company it would be much appreciated. |

Are you looking to apply for a card or do you have a problem with an existing card? |

To apply (as a foreigner AND I assume E2) for a Samsung card you will need to go to a Samsung department store or the application kiosk at a HomePlus store.
You will need:
Your ARC and a friend to help you fill in the form.
After a short while Samsung card company will contact your employer to verify your employment details.
You will then be asked to fax them a copy of your medical card (confirms your job and employer are on the up and up) and probably a copy of your ARC as well.
If you work for a university or a public school you can expect a card application to be approved/denied in about 4 weeks.
If you work at a hakwon you will be declined.
You can also get a card from most banks (even if you work at a hakwon) but you will be required to make a security deposit of 110% of your requested card limit.
quoted from a previous post of mine:
Dear Mr. Ttompatz;
Thank you for using Woori bank service.
As for your inquiry, we have a credit card available to foreign residents.
However, there is a requirement you should meet, a time deposit, which Woori bank is going to take it as a security, and the minimum amount for that should be no less than w1,000,000.
When you are ready for this, please visit your local branch office with your ID card used for your account establishment (it could be either your alien card or passport) and the bankbook. We will be glad to help you.
If you have further questions, please send a message or call Woori Bank Customer Service at 02-2008-5000,#7. Our collect number is 080-365-5000,#7. Representatives are available to assist you from 9:30 AM Monday through to 5:30 PM Friday.
Thank you for using Woori Bank. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you.
Best regards,
Tina
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The way it works is your limit is ~95% of your deposit.
1.1 million won time deposit = 1 million won limit.
2.2 million won time deposit = 2 million won limit.
Your money is placed in a term deposit with an interest (as of Jan 2006) rate of about 4.5-5.5% and then you get a VISA card that can be used globally, can also be used for bus/subway domesticallyand gives discounts at various locations like Everland/LotteWorld (50%), theaters (2000won), various restaurants. etc.
If the clerk in the bank doesn't speak English, get them to phone the number listed above and the Customer service center will assist you with translation and take care of any problems. Takes about 30-35 minutes for the whole process. You get your card in the mail in about a week.
You can get your deposit back early simply by turning in your card and closing the account.
Position and employer don't matter. |

The 1588 number is an automated response in Korean. Will see if I can find someone to help me.

Thanks again for all the info. I got into contact with the bank and with Samsung. A teacher at school helped me with the language issue. Samsung is sending out a dude to come and see me at my school, hopefully today, to do the paperwork. |

When the dude from Samsung arrives I'll ask him about an English service. Maybe he knows who we can call for English help. Will see what I can do. |

KEB has english service, and english customer website where you login and see your bills. Samsung does not have that, all korean, though you can ask for an english speaker when you call customer service. |

I organized a Samsung credit card for myself today. Unfortunately they do not really have an English service available. I spoke to the woman who came to see me and she had no idea. That is the down side.
The up side is that it took me about 15 minutes to fill in the documentation and get approval.
I had my co-teacher at my school call the Samsungcard call center on 1588 8700. Samsung then sent a sales rep or whatever to my school to meet me face to face.
She copied my ARC card.
Asked for my banking details. (For the monthly payments)
Discussed the point systems with me.
I completed a document with the normal info on it like address, telephone numbers, working address and so on.......
She let me choose my own credit limit and the monthly payment date.
There was no deposit like when you apply for a credit card at a Korean bank.
The service was excellent and quick. Just get someone to help you with the language barrier and the rest is a piece of cake. |

What is the benefit of a Samsung credit card over another credit card.
Do they take into account how long you have been in the country or doesn't it matter?
I would like a card as well.
Just started work at a public school am I likely to be knocked back because I'm new here or does that not matter? |

The benefit is not having to pay a security deposit.
I can't answer your other question because I am NOT new in Korea and I do not know what their policy is.
One key thing to remember is that Korean Credit Cards are NOT like Visa or M/C back home.
They are NOT a revolving line of credit that allows you to carry a balance month to month. They are more like the AMEX travel card and require you to pay off the balance every month.
They do allow you to put some things on a multiple payment scheme (3 or 12 payments) but the interest rates are in the range of 12% - 29.90% (depending on who you buy from, what you buy, and how much you carry).
