Quote:
"The Rapture" is contrived from the footnotes contained in the Scofield Reference Bible that was edited by C.I. Scofield, copyrighted, and first published in 1909. The 1917 edition is infamous for its propagation of the false teaching known as premillennialism with "the Rapture" being a popular part of that system of belief.

1909 is a date that's turned up a few times on the sites I've been to, but this is the only one I've found that mentions the Scofield Reference Bible specifically.

Another interesting point raised:
Quote:
Charles F. Stanley, President and Publisher of In Touch monthly magazine, wrote, "When the Bible says that believers will be 'caught up' in the air with the Lord, the literal Greek phrase calls for us to be 'snatched away.' Our term 'Rapture' is the derivative of this wording" (February 2003, p. 25). Observe that he called "Rapture" "our term." He got the term from Lindsey and Scofield (p. 1349). "Rapture" is not a Bible term, but premillennialists would "love to have it so."

Most fundamentalists get their rapture theology from the following passages: I Thess. 4:13-18; I Cor. 15: 51-57, and John 14:1-3.

Peace

In order for the Rapture to happen, the following criteria must be met:

# The nations of the world must unify their currency onto a universal standard.
# There will be peace in Israel according to Ezekiel 38. (a long ways away there)
# There may be a one world government, something like the 7th beast of Revelation, prior to the antichrist's 8th beast government.
# The Jewish temple in Jerusalem must be rebuilt in its original place. (there's a mosque there.)
# The Jewish people must be in control of the land of Israel.
# Many Old Testament commandments must be performed in the temple. This includes the sacrifice of an unblemished red heifer.
# The Antichrist must be walking the earth in human form.

There are actually Christian groups out there who want to demolish the Dome of the Rock so the Temple of Jerusalem may be rebuilt. Very Indiana Jones.

Catholics would never try to control their followers or use religious doctrine to manipulate the populace. Birth control is evil! Obey!

On a separate note, I also like the "Rapture" movie with Mimi Rogers, mostly because it also stars David Duchovony. It's not exactly the way I interpreted the Bible, but hey, one lady has a great tattoo!

Though I have heard many times about what the rapture will be like, I realize that most of it comes from sermons. While they are based on different Bible verses, it is still generally someone's interpretation, like a folk tale. However, if 25% of the world's population suddently disappears one day - I am SO repenting immediately!

(Though I think the end of money and the implantation of "numbers" in our hands in the form of microchips is not that far away)

I read a fictional trilogy based on these concepts (not the series that is so popular today), and it was pretty interesting.

And yet none actually obey.
