I have to teach a "Free Talking" class at my elementary school. There will be 20-25 students. I heard that some of the kids might be in the class only for listening, which I hope isn't true because who needs an audience when trying to convince other students to speak?

So, does anyone have any advice or ideas for this class? I don't want to teach this class. I'd rather teach a reading class, or a writing class, or a knitting class rather than this. HELP!

Thanks!
Alyallen

Just try to figure out what they're interested in. If that requires listening to boys talk about Starcraft and girls talking about Super Junior, so be it, as long as it's in English. Let them talk about whatever they want for the first few classes, and then when they get more comfortable about having "free" conversations in English, you could try bringing in short articles and trying to get them to talk about the topic.

I'm in a similar situation, only we do online conversations instead of in-class conversations. It's kind of ridiculous because they're all in the same room (and I'm in the teacher's room), but whatever. It actually keeps them more on task. Luckily, I have all of my students in other classes, so I know what topics they will talk about and I know their personalities pretty well. If all else fails, go to the old standbys: describing your family, your favorite foods, places you have traveled/would like to travel, what you would like to be when you grow up.

Alyallen.

I spent all last year directing (as teaching is not really the word) , free talking classes, once a week. I have a number of ideas that may help. PM me if you would like some suggestions to help you on your way.
