Inspired by another thread.
I thought it would be instructive to share the ways our textbooks have decieved us.
For instance, my old book (can't remember what it was called), in the first chapter, referred to a 다방 as an innocuous "coffee shop." Even my elementary school students laughed at me for that one. |

Those Backpack bastards told me Pluto was a planet.
I was crushed when I found out the truth.
Also the told me the Backpack songs were fun. |

Let me guess -- I bet your textbook also translated 안마 시술소 as "massage parlour" and 이발소 as "barbershop". They're just incorrigible, aren't they.
Been in many places that actually call themselves a 다방? I certainly have, as not so very long ago they were far more common than places calling themselves a 커피숍, especially outside the capital. Though they basically all served the same thing: crap instant coffee. |

My first Korean text book, given to me for free whispered to me "I'm not going to be of any basic use to you at this time" It wasn't a lie. |

"but pink shirts, even tank-tops, are the very picture of manliness", right?
It wasn't in a textbook, but Koreans assured me that any man who wears a chain (necklace) was a hard-core homo. I quickly took mine off forever. And of course only hookers dyed their hair. Also, tattoos are the exclusive preserve of gangsters, gangster b1tches, and sailors. I fully agree with that one, though. |
