Hi there,
I just want to say that I'm a pleb and and am perfectly fine with it. I like American Idol, music I hear on the radio, and like the Gap and Banana Republic. I sometimes read Syndey Sheldon, John Grisham (not lately), and often vacation in 'on the beaten path' destinations.
This is in response to the increasing number of 'intellectuals' who like to look down on all of the things that commoners such as myself enjoy. In certain circles, and on this board, if you mention you like anything from pop culture, a lot of people will come back with comments like 'How could you POSSIBLY watch/listen/read that CRAP??'
Now, here's the thing...I read 'intellectual' books. I watch foreign films, and I listen to music that no one else has ever heard of. But do I need to talk about these things all of the time? No. Sometimes I just want to talk about who sucks on American Idol. Oh, I guess when I talk to said intellectuals they will give a nod of approval if I qualify my t.v. viewing habits with the comment 'it's a guilty pleasure of mine'. Often, I feel that conversations turn into pissing contests of sorts over who has read the most obscure book or listens to the 'indie-est' band.
I'm going to Singapore for Easter. I mentioned this to some people. These are some of the comments I heard 'oh, but it's so sterile', 'you should go to Malaysia instead', 'it's so expensive', etc. For god's sake! Can't a person just take a vacation anymore? I have an interest in Singapore and want to go there. I feel that unless you say you're going to live with Pygmies in the rainforest, eating maggots every day, you haven't had a REAL vacation. (Edit: not that Pygmies necessarily eat maggots)
Okay, so maybe I'm not a pleb. Maybe I'm just well-rounded. |

Amen!
I'm a pleb too!
I'm going to Phuket for my vacation and all I plan on doing is...sitting on the beach because I think that as hard as I work...I'm not going to stay in some dirty hostel, force myself to see as much as I can in 5 days, and then go back to school less rested than I was before.
yes...I love American Idol and pop culture and pop music. I hang out in clubs (and shock! the soldiers too!). so that's me.
(and really really happy that I'm not the only one! |

Lao Wai.
Guess I am to. Love John Grisham, Simon and Garfunkel, and dream about sitting on the beach for an entire holiday. Couldn't be bothered with a "gung -ho" vacation.
I hate books that debate things or use language I can't understand. Can't stand politics, infact, I won't participate in any kind of intellectual discussion whatsoever. It's just too confusing and I'm just not interested.
As for foreign films, some are good, but mostly I'd rather watch ones in English.
I love meat pies, fishnchips, and bacon bones. Basically, I'm a meat and 3 veg boy.
Being a pleb is ok. |

forget Grisham... read Tolstoy or Milan Kundera..
pop music... maybe Dylan is allowed... all others are fluff...
listen to pre II world war jazz instead...
TV.... throw it out the window or keep it permanently tuned into Masterpiece Theatre.... (not theater)....
Vacation... you should volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.... travel packages
and basking in the sun are extravagances.... where is your decency?
Food? only eat organic veggies... don't ever eat anything with processed sugar.... in fact don't eat anything that pleases you... if it makes you happy, toss it in the trash...
and don't eat anything with a face... unless it is a recycled Jack O' Lantern
free time and hobbies should be avoided... instead grab an old pillow case
and use it to collect trash from the street....
american idol? the only real american idol is Abraham Lincoln, but if you read the serious work of Ben Franklin then that is also allowable...
transportation? a bike must be of lightweight aluminum... cars are unnecessary.... unless you are a volunteer for meals on wheels....
pygmies have rights too! avoid any reference to any group in your online rants.... also, quit insulting maggots... they are some god's creatures...or some such reasoning... maggots are good! you should keep some as pets....
paper.... only buy recycled, (except TP)
ink... why overload the environment... you can reduce your carbon footprint by grinding up some old charcoal from a korean heater...didn't you learn anything from Al Gore?
and don't forget: as Bill Gates said: 640k is enough computing power for anyone... go buy a recycled commodore....or a vintage '78 mac...
in fact, don't even read this post... instead go shave your head, throw on your sheet like a toga and devote your life to a buddhist temple drinking root tea and contemplating the emptiness of the blown out easter eggs that others will soon be indulging in.... |

I may or may not be pleb in nature; but traditional British and Irish pub food found all over the Atlantic Provinces and parts of the rest of Canada are the f'in' balliest, lovliest types of grub going in me book. |

Lao Wai is a Pleb, and I am, too.
I hate people that try to look down on others because they aren't as cultured.
Why read a book? To be entertained. Why watch a film? To be entertained.
Not everything has to be intellectually stimulating. I like Armageddon. I like Stephen King books. If there's nothing on in English, I'll leave it on the WWE while I clean the apartment. So f-ing what.
"Oh, you have to hear this! It's a girl playing the harpsichord and she sings in a baby doll voice."
"I don't watch any film made by a major studio."
Truth is, you know that most of those prickish type of people watch all of the same crap we do when they are alone. |

Yeah, I went through a phase when I read the "classics" and found most of them to be BORING!! I read to escape! When I watch TV or movies, I do it to escape! Vacation = escape!!
I get as much from reading historical novels as I'd get from reading a history of a country...and enjoy it more!
As for the "snobs": I'll try not to think of you as nerds if you try not to think of me as an imbecile!! |

Still, it must hurt when a skinhead laughs at you and calls you uncultured. |

Man this OP is about as fresh and crispy as kids in my high school who wore polo shirts to punk rock and hardcore shows and sported traditional haircuts. It's like someone saying they really enjoy a fine filet mignon but also don't mind eating at Burger King. Big deal.
btw the reason people make fun of music on the radio is because 95% of the time it's pure crap and some of us out there are bitter at the radio and the music industries hustling bromide and forcing quality music out into the fringes, then trying to make it illegal to easily access it. |

Yeah. You're probably like the people always coming down on others about their preferences because they don't match your own. The fact that you summarily dismiss the music on the radio '95% of the time' tells me so. No, wait. You're probably just more highly evolved than me. My bad. |

Don't know why you'd be bothered. It's the smart people that always cop flack.
The proles have the numbers, see?
I've often mumbled to myself that life would be a lot easier if I was a brickie from Dagenham.
As the Thais say, 'kit mak mai dee.' - 'Thinking too much isn't good.'
So, console yourself with the fact that you're probably in the majority.
I'm off to read Proust.. |

Don't delude yourself into thinking that just because you listen to obscure music or read boring literature you're smart. |

pleb as in the old latin plebeian?
must be a British slang these days
where I come from such a hierarchical concept is absurd
i'm always amazed at how much superior/inferior upper/lower class kind of language comes out of England even in the 21st century
makes you wonder if elizabeth is still seen as something more than just another woman but with metal on her head
