I'm teaching Army guys who range in age from 26 to mid 30's and our text is good, but pretty serious and kind of dry. So, I decided to add "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly" just for a change of pace, intonation and rhythm work, rhymes and gestures.

Each week I give them a new piece. At this point, we're up to the bird. How absurd! Today I'll introduce the cat. Imagine that!

Other than choral repetition, we have had team races with a stopwatch to see who can say it the fastest (to trick them into memorizing it). So far, Lt. Kim and Lt. Kim are the team champions at 41.3 seconds.

Does anyone have any good and/or fun ideas on making the memorization part fast, effective and efficient? Overall, I think I have a good thing going, but I need some variety in my presentation strategy. Any help would be appreciated.

btw, after initial resistance to the first verse, they find themselves having a good time with it. It's good fun watching guys in uniforms 'wriggling and jiggling and wiggling'. Almost all of them are natural hams.

While wandering around the internet this morning, I stumbled on this site:
http://members.aol.com/HOON4VR/fiomain.html called Finish It Off! It has a bunch of 3 line poems that students then complete (and the site suggests some rhymes for them to use). It looks like it could be an entertaining 5 or 10 minutes from time to time.

Thanks for the link. Excellent for the students that quickly complete all the tasks that I had prepared for them in a lesson.

Ya Ta

I have the karaoke up on my site. Works great if you have the capability in your classroom. What's good is that you can slow the tempo and the song plays slow, speed up when students gain confidence.

It is in my Book Nook. Click and scroll or directly download here

You have to download the player beforehand.

Ya-Ta,

That's a cool site. Thanks. I used to do something similiar but just from what I myself unprofessionally could come up with....makes for a good sharing, writing exercise. If I get some time this week, I'm going to make this into a powerpoint exercise, so a teacher can do and use if full class....

After a moment of discussion, can reveal possible other answers...

OP, here's a game I'll be trying next week which is good for memorising and/or pronunciation and/or vocab.

I thought the site mentioned about the 3 line poems was really cool so during some downtime I quickly made a powerpoint presentation using some of the materials/poems. Take a look in my Presentation folder, on my website below. Called, Finish it OFF......pretty neat and interactive. Can be used in many ways me thinks...

Thanks for the ideas so far. I am a little disappointed that no on has really given me any ideas on activities for helping students memorize a poem. People who teach elementary classes MUST have some ideas. Don't you?

Can I ask what why this is your objective -- memorization of the song/poem?
