People post on Dave's for a number of resons.
Some post because they have a question, Some post cause they can answer a question.
Some post because they want to make a statement. Some post because they are bored.
Some people post when they are sober, some people post when they are drunk.
I have laughed while reading some peoples posts, and I have been amazed at others.
I have read my OWN posts, and I have said to myeslf, "How can I have been so stupid".
What ever.
So, when people post, why does some one have to pipe in and say that the correct? Dave's is not "a test".
Who cares? We post what we post, and we read what we read.
When we post here we are either relaxed or completerly stressed out.
I have seen posts and have said to myself, "wow, that is me".
At 10 oclock, I am back to being myself. |

Your post answers its own question. Some people are just bored or want to have fun by pointing out someone's mistakes. Doesn't it usually just happen when someone makes a glaringly flagrant mistake? Or like when someone makes a post about grammar and opens it with a sentence that questions "resons".
Now, you want to talk about Korean language grammar police and you've got a point. Any time someone writes Korean on here, if there's even one teensy mistake (like when someone erroneously conjugated 되다) it gets pointed out. That's very annoying. |

"Or like when someone makes a post about grammar and opens it with a sentence that questions "resons"."
What's weird about that? It's a spelling mistake, not a grammar mistake!
I thought this thread was about the grammar police, not the spelling police!

Yes, sometimes it can seem a bit anal if its a typo or someones just obviously typing carelessly.
It can be annoying if substituted for an argument in some debate.
However, most people have at least a few words they're not sure of, or habitual misuses of English. Having them pointed out allows them to be rectified.
I spelt "definitely" with an "a" ("definately") until someone pointed it out. I fixed it, and I'm grateful.
If someone writes "your" instead of "you're", or "rediculous", or whatnot, and someone else points out the error in good faith, it should be taken as such and rectified. It shouldn't be defended as if it was some essential part of your identity.
Anyway, regardless of the intent of the correction, if taken on board, it will be a gift that keeps on giving. |

Ostensibly, this is a site for English teachers, no? Unless we're going to start encouraging truth in advertising and calling it "Dave's Korean Web site for college graduates slacking off for three to five years before getting started on their careers at home who don't really give a rip about the language or teaching, but just want to pound soju and Asian women," I would hope we could all act like we get paid to know the difference between "than" and "then".

People who (a) are native English speakers, (b) have graduated from a Western university, (c) work as ENGLISH teachers (often in a private institution at considerable cost to parents), and (d) still don't know the difference between 'your' and 'you're' are, quite simply, excrement. |

I made this post after I was searching for something on Dave's. I did not find what I was looking for, by the way.
I came across posts where people were asking questions, and instead of some people answering them, they attacked the posters grammar or spelling.
Yes, we are teachers. In school we do the best we can.
When we write reports, there is no excuse for spelling and grammar mistakes. We are not getting graded for posting here.
When we talk with our friends, we use "short cuts" all the time. When people post, some times they are tired, and some times they post fast.
Now it is almost 11PM, and I am tired. If I saw a post where some one asked "How do I get rid of mold?", I might say, "get a bucket, put in 1/4 clorox, and 3/4 water, dunk the rag in it and scrub REAL hard. Rinse it with water, and scrub it again.......HARD. maake sure you dry the area.
Does it matter if I use 2 a's in "make?" Does it matter if I use a capital letter? All that matters is that I answered the question. No one needs to write, "Why are you in Korea teaching English?" |

There's a big difference between typos (maake, and sometimes even your/you're) and glaring grammatical or spelling errors.
I like what deadman said:
...If someone writes "your" instead of "you're", or "rediculous", or whatnot, and someone else points out the error in good faith, it should be taken as such and rectified. It shouldn't be defended as if it was some essential part of your identity.
I agree with Spinoza, Qinella and Anyong Bluth too, we're English teachers! At least let's spell reasonably well and try to write in an easy to read, straightforward way. |
