Aside from Korea, which of these places would be a good place to live and teach? It's pretty much been settled that money wise, Korea wins hands down. But I am talking about the other aspects of teaching abroad - the natives, the sights, the culture, the food & drink, the western-style comforts we so dearly cherish (ie high speed internet access). I, personally, would choose Japan if it wasn't for the huge start up costs. What are some of your opinions on the best places to live and teach outside of Korea? Break it down!

If I had to relocate I'd choose Beijing in a second. However, if you can't hack it in Korea you don't stand a chance in China.

Shouldn't the question be 'where's the best place to go if you get a free one-way ticket?'

Is it only Korea that fronts the airfare? I heard Japan doesn't do that, but no info on the other two locales.

I have been to all four, and lived for more than a year in the 3 bigger ones. I don't know, it depends on so many things.

You can't help the guy out?

You've got the skinny on the situation. Couldn't you just respond with some kind of a point by point analysis with rankings for all 4 places and why you feel that way?

Busy, huh?

Me, too. Kinda. Japan, Taiwan and now here. How was your experiences? If I remember, you seemed pretty keen to Japan. Wasn't your avatar a picture of Himeji castle before? I spent a year in Saitama prefecture near Tokyo.

Well, Japan was the first country I lived in (outside of my home country of course), so it's sort of like a first love kinda thing. But ya, I think if could have the exact same job with the same benefits in any of the four (even Thailand), I would choose Japan, I think.

For experiences, I would need more detailed questions. I could obviously go on for pages and pages.

And ya, it was Himeji Castle. Awesome castle.

It's funny that you say "first love" 'cause it was a "broken heart" for me. For years before going I was so fascinated with Japan. History, movies, culture, literature were the things I studied on my free time. Then went to uni for 2 years of language and cultural studies.

Finally went to Japan on a sister-state teacher program and that's when my nightmare began. I was so disappointed by the whole experience. So I'll never...ever live there again.

Funny thing about it is I'm STILL fascinated with Japan. I still read a lot 'bout it's history and I wanna take up the language again. Heck, next week I have a test to get my 1st degree in Kendo(Kumdo)! I guess it just wasn't meant to be for us...I hope Japan can get over lose'n me and move on! We need closure! Very Happy

First choice is China since my home is in China.
Second choice is Thailand, because of the beaches and the warm weather.
Third and last choice would be Taiwan and Japan, because it would be hard for my wife to get a visa for both countries.
