I'll just add that Hugo Chavez came across very well when interviewed by Barbara Walters last week.
He conceded that his name-calling of President Bush might be considered offensive, but that it was not nearly as offensive as invading Iraq, etc...
When asked to try to give a message in English to the American people, he finished strongly by saying that his message would be the same as his hero, Martin Luther King, who also had a dream that everyone, including poor people, could be happy and peaceful (or something like that...) |
As I stated previously, maybe he can fool a lot of people but to me, his body language showed someone akin to a used car salesman.......His use of Martin Luther King Jr. was sick -- something a smart Grade 8er might put in a paper (or more and more with the dumbing down of our universe, a senior in H.S.) to score points with the teacher. Playing to the crowd. Sick and MLK would be rolling in his grave seeing his name used by this man who trampled on so many......
If you know anything of his history and his persona, you have to say he is a power monger, a populist not for the people but for himself. An illusionist. I agree fully with Mack's comment,

| My opinion of Chavez is that he's a master manipulator of public opinion but a generally incompetent head of state. |
Bad when our own electorial system is eroded through "slickness" and bad when revolutionaries like Chavez do so, in the name of "pie in the sky".

Is this the same Venezuela who had a 16.9% percent increase in GDP for 2004? Stats clearly show that they have also increased their GDP/capita by over $3000 in the past 10 years.
You are correct in saying that they have been steadily growing since the 50's however that growth has been exponential under Chavez and more importantly the money is finally making it's way to those who need it the most.
All this while America has been trying to subvet Chavez at every turn. As for the dip during the recession, the same could be said for most global economies seeing that how that recession (2001 - 2003) was international in scope. The only difference is that other economies are not posting the numbers that Venezuela is in the aftermath of that recession

Was that cause of good economic management by Chavez? Or was it cause the price of oil doubled? |

Why? My position on Chavez is that the people of Venezuala can do what they bloody well like, and other countries (like the US) should keep their nose out of their affairs. If he's a wanker, that's the business of his countrymen - not mine - not yours.
And I especially love the way Chavez annoys people like you - it's such fun to watch. |

You make an op called "Three Cheers for Chavez", and defend him. Now, you merely support the right of people to elect him. Quite a change, no?
I'd like to offer this as a personal retraction from BigBird. She changed her mind, and feels so embarrassed about it she is unable to admit it.
We forgive you. Well, I don't. But, maybe others will?
From the OP:

Yes, beating down his people and their economy. |

I can't wait until you take that position on my country. I know you won't, which will call your consistency into question with your feelings on Venezuela.

You gonna admit you made a mistake? You wanted to rub people's nose in Chavez and by doing so you stumbled into him. |

OP does not defend Chavez but rather it promotes and celebrates him as a model for all of Latin America and the Caribbean vis-a-vis "U.S. influence."
Multiple unfortunate assumptions at play in such a statement... |

1. She's stupid
2. She's a woman.
One dosnt suggest the other but when you have 2 of them in the equation that all equals lack of logic and basic grasp of the facts of the matter. |

Three Cheers for Libya?
| Quote: |
I had not visited the country in several years, and although I had heard the claims of the anti-Chvez crowd, I saw the situation for myself. The similarities to a Libya visit I made almost exactly 20 years ago were eerie. Upon my arrival at the Caracas airport, the up escalator was out of order making it tough to carry heavy luggage to the next floor. On my attempted flight to Maracaibo, the airport gate signs were active but none was even remotely accurate, neither for destination nor time. Gate assignments were changing by word of mouth. Announcements were made only in Spanish, again echoes of the Arabic-only announcements at the Tripoli airport then.
I asked about an ATM machine and the airline agent looked at me with incredulity. You want to change dollars? And then and there he offered me 3,000 Bolivars to the dollar, way above the official 2,150. Soon I found out he had actually short-changed me. The going rate is 4,000 and last month went as high as 5,000. |
When are people going to learn? Leftist Authoritarian economic principles do not work. Never had, and definitely never will in a global economy. |

| Imagine President Roh decided to rename the won the "the mighty kimchi" in order to increase its value. How much of a beating would he take in the press? This is essentially what Chavez did in Venezuela. You take away Chavez' admittedley entertaining anti-American rhetoric and no one would stand up for him. |
