Hi,

Just a slight rant. What is with parents spelling their children's names phonetically or in really 'whacked' ways? Take the contestant on American Idol. Her name is Jordan. Oh, sorry...JORDIN. When I was teaching in Canada I noticed this phenomenon in the lower primary grades. I think the impetus behind it is for parents to give their child some originality. But parents, hello! Even if you spell it Mykyl, your kid still has the generic name, Michael. Stefenee is still Stephanie, and Leahsa is still Lisa. If you want your kid to have some originality, give them an ORIGINAL name! Furthermore, I think these new spellings look ugly and make it look like you kid was too dumb to spell it the right way.

Sorry, I don't see what you're getting at. Is there a more common way to spell 'Lao Wai'? Embarassed

Hey,

In Mandarin, the 'wai' in Lao Wai sounds like the word 'why'. If I was trying to spell it phonetically, I could use 'Lao Why'. However, I chose the most common spelling, which I believe is 'Lao Wai'.

Ah...but you were ranting about NORTH AMERICAN phonics, right?? We'd NEVER spell "why" as "wai"!!

If I had a student who spelled their name "Wai" I'd pronounce it "way". Wouldn't you???

No actually, I wouldn't. Think of 'Tai Chi'. 'Tai' has the same sound as 'Wai', and so, they are both spelled using -ai but sound like 'why'.

Anyway, the point of my original post was that people should just stick to the original spellings. As for my screen name, Lao Wai is the most common way to spell this Chinese word in English. That's why I chose it. Just as you could spell Tai Chi as 'Tie Chee', but to me, it looks stupid.

Parents do this, too. They would name their kid something like Shitty, but pronounced Shi-TEE. I forgot the specific example(s) I saw, but the point is that some people are just retards who like to handicap their children with ridiculous names.

Parents want their child to be special/better/stand out in a crowd.

This phenomena used to be something the rich did (John Mark Paul Jones III). These days, the gutter-trash and the middle class want in on the name thing.

I always got a laugh out of people my age who had babies, and named them something flaunty, rich, and male-model-ish. Whatever happened to simple names like Todd, Chris, Mark, etc.? We have to name our boy children like they're male pin-ups: Brandon or girls something frumped-up like Brianna or Madison.

The two-name names are the ones that make me want to barf: John Michael (used as one full name), etc.

Oh, pleeeze.

This name generator can help you create your kid's trendy name:

I suppose it's always been this way... the older names just seem more normal to us, because we grew up with them.

This is an interesting read:

Checked out the "frechboys" site and it comes with this warning:

WARNING: Using this generator for serious purposes, such as actually naming the helpless fruit of your loins, may cause a wide range of symptoms including uncontrollable snickering, typographical errors and matricide. Laughing Laughing

Names should fit the future of the child you bring into the world. A girl named Bambi is NOT going to be a bank president!!
