Should teachers annual salary be more than 42 million won per year?

According to the National Tax Service, workers in Ulsan City topped annual salary rankings in 2005 with an average of 42 million won. South Cholla Province came next with 38.6 million won, followed by Seoul Metropolitan City, dominated by white-collar workers, with 38.5 million won. The national average was 36.7 million won.
Kim, 37, who has been doing mechanical work in Ulsan City for nine years, earns 60 million won a year. "Although I have only a high school diploma, I earned more than my friends who have college degrees," Kim said. |

Throw a free apartment and round-trip ticket into the mix and 42 million won doesn't look that far off. Heck I know people whose school paid about that much in key money alone for their apartment. |

They have that debate in the US quite a bit. There are plenty of trades that earn money that is comparable to public school teachers.
I use to do computer consulting for a couple law firms. Our technicians, many of whom were self-taught without degrees, earned more than the entry-level lawyers. I had one of them treating me like a janitor one day so I pointed out that my company was billing her company $120+ per hour but I was happy to wait. The look on her face was priceless. |

I don't have a problem with teachers earning that much. I only wish it were me. |

With their on-the-side hours, I'm sure a lot of teachers make that and more, with less hours than that mechanical worker who probably smells like a slagheap by the end of each day. |

Maybe, but I have seen a teacher with a thick stack of test papers they had to mark over night. I also know when I was tired and dirty, I could go home, have a shower and forget work until the next day. |
