Alright, I've been here just under 3 weeks now and still have no idea where people hang out in downtown UiJeongBu..
I understand that most people routinely head into Seoul and all, but there HAS to be a decent place in the area where people go when they don't want to bother with the hassle of the subway ride...
So where do people go here?!? |

A little bit off topic (can't help you out with places to go etc there) but...
I was talking to my students recently about what they would do for Chuseok, and one boy said "I'm going to my grandmother's house in Uijeongbu"
Then he paused for a bit, thought, and said "teacher... Uijeongbu... first die"
I said "what do you mean?" as I was extremely puzzled by this.
He thought a wee bit more and then said "North Korea.. nuclear bomb... uijeongbu people first die"
So I guess you've got that to look forward to! |

What a snazzy slogan for the Uijeongbu Tourism office. |

Having taken a trip to Ujeongbu, my best suggestion for fun would be to get on the #1 and head for Seoul. |

Sweeeeeeeeet.. Just what I wanted to hear...
Downtown Uijeongbu actually does have a ton of bars and such, my problem is I don't know where to go... (I've done "the stroll" twice - nothing cooler than a foreigner walking ALONE looking like a lost puppy)
Well if you don't see a post from me for an extended period of time, I obviously was "first to die"
Ok.. how's this... if I must head into Seoul every night I want to go out.. where is the closest place to say.. Donbangsan station (where Line #1 and #7 intersect)?? Nowon-gu?? where?!?!
Anyone.. Anyone.. goin' on 3 weeks here and I'm already sick of the long subway rides just to hang out with the regulars at the usual haunts.. I want something semi-local!! |

I live in between Uijeongbu and Pocheon. If you think there is nothing in Uijeongbu, try taking the 138 bus and take a look out here.
I go to Uijeongbu sometimes. I dunno where people go. I have seen lots of American soldiers around there. I'd try the western bars around the train station. There's a cinema there too.
If you want to go a bit into Seoul, but not too far. Try Hoegi. Nice University area. Or the stop before Seokgye (as in if you are heading towards Seoul, I forgot the name) also a university area. |

There's a pub called Tom's ville just off the main drag in UJB, it's got a good atmosphere and plays decent tunes. You may run into a soldier or two there, but it's not a typical GI bar, although there are some there close to Camp Laguardia and Camp Red Cloud, Trust me, they're not too good. There is also another ville if you take the number 1 bus towards Camp Stanley, you'll find another ville. UJB itself has some HOFs and the like. I actually liked going to alot of them because they did not cater to the GIs, There are a couple larger clubs and some "live cafes'" there...Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing too many teachers around...(not that I was looking for them)...even so, I like UJB area. And yes, the whole town is a target reference point on a North Korean artillery battery commander's overlay!! I say "get bombed before being bombed!"
I think Tom's ville has a website too... |

i was at the dragon bar at nowon not so long ago. lots of ex-apts in there if that is what you are after.
i understand that now and then you might want to interact with fellow westerners, but think about this. why have you come to korea if you are only going to hang out in western bars all the time? walk into a bar on your own that is full of koreans. you'll either get beaten up or maybe you just might make a korean friend. |

I always hang out with Koreans..
The point of this post was to find a semi-local place where I can occasionally go and not have to speak grade 6 English..
I'm out with my students all the time here.. even at my last job in a smaller city, going out for drinks with students and other Koreans was the norm.. so don't go categorize me as "that guy" in Korea..
I do enjoy hanging out with fellow waygooks now and then though.. I don't feel like I'm in high school again when I do such... |
