I know that Korea is years (if not decades) behind the West in enacting laws which protect ppls health in public places, but i would of thought most/many Westerners, with our self-proclaimed social enlightenment, would have a common consideration for their fellow man in bars; especially those tiny ones that serve the foreign community. Instead of sharing their toxic smoking fumes in small, confined areas they would, I thought, take the 15 or so steps to the stairwell or corridor and kill themselves (in small increments) there; but no. We "advanced, logical" Waygooks are just as rude, selfish and pigheaded as the ppl we complain about daily on Daves without Western laws to force us to do the right thing.
And in preemptive response to the idiot who is about to write "if you dont like smelly, asthma-inducing, cancer causing smoke, dont go to bars", may I just say that my right to patron bars and enjoy the specific social activity exclusive to a bar atmosphere supersedes any "right" to pump poison into the air.
Most modern states have banned all smoking in bars despite excellent ventilation in the West. Should we not take a leadership role in Korea and use the hallways/streets when smoking in closet size bars? Are we really like monkeys that require the force of law and threat of punishment to make us do the right thing?

Pretty much no, we should not. That would be pretty presumptuous. |

Presumptuous to respect the health and welfare of ppl we encounter? Presumptuous to lead by example? I think you are smoking more than cigarettes. |

| We should also quit driving cars, farting and using air conditioners. Save Korea. |

Go ahead, lead by example - I wholeheartedly endorse a "be the change you want to see in the world" approach.
That's different, however, than trying to shame others into doing so, which appears to be your current strategy. |

I've got a better idea. Why don't the non smokers kill themselves (in small increments) by drinking their alcohol in the stairwells? |

He he, this sounds funny but I guess your intention's just well-meaning. It would've been cool if you insinuated you would set good examples and live up to your principles as a mature individual, not as an "enlightened" westerner as opposed to... |

I love your logic; if we can't change it all, don't change anything. Using this approach/mind-set, we would all still be working in coal factories shoveling lumps for 16 hours a day. Change comes in small steps.
I was hoping to actually focus this discussion on one topic, smoking in Korean bars, and not have it high jacked into the realm of the ridiculous, which seems the fate of many posts here. |

Unless it's spilt on your lips by accident, booze doesn't have the ability to enter your body unless you wish it. U do see the different, dont you? |

Haha, yes that does sound pretentious if not presumptuous. |

the "lead by example" approach would be practical if koreans looked to western examples as reasons to change day-to-day habits.
they don't. and most people who go a bit native here tend to really "go native", wouldn't you say? i think that the "i can get away with this here but not at home" factor plays a part. |

| We live in a society where it's fine for males to smoke almost anywhere except in front of their elders. What's wrong with fitting in? |

OP, I do understand your point and your cause is very valiant. However, smokers are a stubborn bunch at the best of times and very, very difficult to convert. I doubt you will find many smokers agreeing to your proposal, but fair play to you for trying.
On the topic of non-smoking bars. I wouldn't have a problem with them here as I don't have a problem with them at home. As a smoker, I rarely visit them. When I do, I either don't smoke or will pop outside for one. If you go to non-smoking restaurants (and I'm thinking of Carne Station specifically here) you will see foreigners smoking outside or in the stairwells. Not a problem. However, if smoking IS permitted somewhere, then it's highly unlikely that any smokers (myself included) are going to exit the place for a ciggie. |

Sarcasm can be productive in a thread.
Personally, I like smokey bars because so many cities and states in the US have taken away people's right to smoke there and business owners' right to allow smoking. I don't smoke, either, but sometimes I truly miss smelling smoke in a bar or restaurant. It brings me back to the good ol' days.
In the US, the owner of the business should put up a sign on the door stating smoking is or isn't allowed. That should be the only regulation the government enforces.
Bukowski said:

That's my addition to the well-being of the world, Korea and the USA included. |
