Hey, it could've been worse - the WWE and Vince McMahon also tried to buy Pride ...
The Fox article relates how the Fertitta brothers (who also own casinos...) bought UFC when it was struggling in 2001. In 2006 they did as much pay-per-view business as the WWE - over $200 million in buys. This deal reportedly cost them under $70 million...
Pride will continue to be run under that name, but there will be more match-ups between the two groups' respective champions - which should be a plus for fans who can afford the PPV's... |

| Pride was good but it was also a joke.. Seriously it took the fighter like 30 minutes just to get past his intro song the loud annoying anouncer etc. |

While I was at first skeptical of this deal, the potential for huge bouts can't be ignored. The PRIDE cards were starting to slip into K-1 nonsense lately ,huge upsets in the Los Vegas show notwithstanding, were in danger of of become irrelevant. I mean Hay-zeus Christo, is anybody really pumped about Butterbean vs. Zulu? If so, PRIDE 34 has your unique sensibilities in mind.
Dana White, for all his faults, threw down the gauntlet in Roppongi yesterday and said the UFC fighters were "coming to kick your asses". Now WWE theatrics aside, I think we can all agree that some type of (at least) annual championship card would be fantastic. The Japanese fans reacted to this with the usual class we've come to expect of them, and not the boorish booing of the UFC fans. I think the way to view this is to look back at the merging of the AFC and NFC (American football) leagues to form the NFL back in the '60s. The result being dependably huge and exciting fights. |

As long as it doesn't turn into the disaster WWE is now after devouring WCW, ECW and countless other independents over the years.
Sounds like it could be good. I usually watch neither sport...but the idea of head to heads between champions would get me watching. Hope it works out.... |

Thats funny cause its true. Atleast the WWE guys KNOW that what they are doing is a joke. Grown men in undies rolling around on the ground and fighting....sad. |

I don't agree. I think UFC has turned itself into a legitimate sport. It used to be a side show full of mismatches, but the guys in the UFC now are legitimate, well trained athletes. I can understand if you don't appreciate the sport, but I wouldn't say there's anything "sad" about it. |

Lots of these guys are milionaires. Who cares if they can't pick up another skill. They are set for life. They made it into history books of sport. What have you done lately?

A common misconception about the sport is that it leaves a fighter beaten and punch-drunk going into middle age. Boxing, however, has a much longer and better documented history of doing this. Fights are stopped on a simple knock-out and competitors are not given the opportunity to take a standing 8, then come back for more punishment. Additionally, the smaller gloves lessen the point of impact, and while more damage might be done to a smaller area, the brain isn't rattled as much as it would were it to be hit by a boxing glove.
Of course, a roundhouse kick to the head, such as the one done by Cro Cop to Wanderlei last year, always has the the potential to kill a man. As of yet there hasn't been a single death or serious (life threatening) injury in the sport of mixed martial arts. Compare this to the handful of annual deaths in the sport of boxing.
Finally, if you think a man is washed-up after 35, you have yet to see Randy Couture come out of retirement at the age of 43 to defeat 30-year-old, 6 ft 8 in, 265 lbs Tim Sylvia. He not only defeated him, he dominated him. The kids call it pwning.
Like all sports, it carries a risk. But with modern medicine, training techniques, and diet, an athlete can have a long and prosperous career. |

The last tournee hurt PRIDE's rep big time. I think the UFC buyout works out for the best.
I hope this gives Fedor the chance to prove to everyone that he is the strongest fighter in the world. Couture is an excellent fighter and he did a good job with Silvia but I doubt he'll be able to deal with Crocop or Fedor
It was fun to see him here in Korea a couple months ago.
And what's up with the tools on this board shittin' on MMA? I definitely isn't for everyone but it is most certainly the future of fighting |

Boxers, maybe. The top guys are but 99% of boxers retire with nothing. But thats boxing. This is UFC, which is tiny. I doubt more than a handful of the UFC/MMA/K! guys will retire with a million. Most will retire with pretty much nothing to show for their time in UFC/Pride/K1. Infact thats true of pretty much all atheletes out there.
