Alcohol Consumption Falls to 17-Year Low
Quote:
Household spending on alcohol and tobacco fell to its lowest level in 17 years last year as people take better care of their health, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK) yesterday.
In 2006, households spent 6.75 trillion won ($7.2 billion), a 4.6 percent decrease from the same period a year ago. The consumption is the lowest since 1989 when spending on alcohol and tobacco amounted to 6.5 trillion won.
It was the second consecutive year that household consumption of alcohol and tobacco has dropped year-on-year.
``With people becoming more conscious of health and seeking a well-being lifestyle, the smoking rate dropped and consumption of liquor declined, it said.
The figure, however, is not equal to the countrys total spending on alcohol and tobacco as it excluded liquor and cigarettes consumed in restaurants and bars.
In contrast, household spending on communication services, including fees for cell phones and the Internet, soared in 2006 over 2005.
The BOK said households spent 26.7 trillion won on communication services last year, a 5.46 increase compared to 2005.
``Household spending on communication services exceeded spending on meals and accommodations for the first time, the BOK said.
Households spent 25.4 trillion won on meals and accommodations last year. Household spending on communication services increased for three consecutive years. It rose 4.94 percent in 2004, 4.85 percent in 2005 and 5.46 percent in 2006.

Alcohol Consumption Decreased in 2005
Quote:
Alcohol consumption in Korea decreased for the first time in seven years in 2005, with the National Tax Service crediting the decrease to the well-being fad. NTS analysis based on alcohol tax reported by liquor companies showed that total production in 2005 was 3.02 million kiloliters, a 2.7 percent decrease from 2004 (3.1 million kiloliters). Output had been consistently increasing since 1998.
By variety, an adult drank 78.5 bottles of beer in 2005, a decrease of 4.3 bottles from the previous year. Beer consumption per year in Korea fell below 80 bottles for the first time since 2000. Soju consumption per year also decreased, by 0.1 bottles to 71.3 bottles. But whisky bucked the trend, increasing by 0.03 bottles from the past year to 0.58 bottles.

I think that this is good news, though for some reason, I remain a little skeptical. I don't know why. |

Considering that Koreans dont drink at home in the same way westerners do, I'd say that the comment about bars being ignored makes the conclusions about alcohol consumption relatively useless.

I think people are drinking less. People are involving and discovering that alcohol is weird. When you think about it, it is. It's kind of pointless.
