All I know is that it was as dark as early evening outside my window a few minutes ago because of the crap.

From what I've been led to believe, it's not the loess that's harmful per se, but the particulate that accompanies it as it sweeps over the most heavily polluted parts of industrial China on its way to Korea. Is that true?

Yes, that's true. But even if the particles were 'pure' and contained no contaminants harmful to human or animal life, I believe it would still be causing the same hundreds of millions of dollars worth of economic damage to industries (semiconductor cleanrooms, ship painting processes, others I can't remember at the moment) for Korea, Japan, and of course China itself, though I've only seen estimated loss figures presented by Japan & Korea. So health & medical problems and related costs are on top of all that.

This is my first "yellow dust" experience as I have been in Korea only since Sept... Can the yellow dust cause a sore throat? I have had a sore throat for more than a week now, yet I feel OK. Is this a common ailment related to YD? I'm on the east coast and can't actually see the dust, but I know it must be out there if you're getting it in Seoul...

In regards to loess and pollutants:
I can see how loess could abrade a chemically polluted surface and thereby create 'pollution particles' that would be transported via the same mechanism as the loess itself. Additionally, I could see pollutants being adsorbed (not absorbed) by loess and again being transported via the same mechanism, and spreading the pollutants when deposition occurs.

In regards to 'pure' loess
Without doubt, the eolian deposition of loess within an urban environment could result in costly cleanup costs, loss in productivity, general health issues related to particulate-saturated air, etc. dependent on the accumulation and intensity.

I haven't studied East Asian earth sciences very intensely, but from what I understand, increses in loess events can be attributed to massive deserification occuring in China and Mongolia.

Just damn glad I chose Busan.

You've got an interesting topic to bone up on, given your background and interest. Yeah, Busan is a good place to be. The poster VanIslander has said it's far less noticeable down there, but the east coast is also where the country's shipbuilders are located, and they do have problems. I wonder how long before the western coast comes unfit for human habitation during part of the year.

Yeah, VI is right. It's not really noticeable down here on lovely Geoje-do. I almost feel like I'm missing out on part of my Korea experience! Laughing
I keep telling myself to seek out any signs of the dust next time I head out of the apartment -- but I always forget. I guess that's a good problem to have.

As VI always urged, come on down!

According to the military link monitoring yellow sand levels, it went well over the 1000 mark on Saturday (Mar. 31...) AFN is still advising all its personel to stay indoors (although the chart looks like it took a sharp drop today...)

This is my first yellow sand experience. This morning I thought it was just hazy/foggy, since I live right on the harbor and a bit of sea mist tends to roll in during the morning. But nope, yellow sand ahoy. I only went outside once today, just down to the corner to buy a bottle of water, but I heard kids playing around outside all day. Is that really a good idea?

Well, you know... this IS the land where child car seats are considered a fashion faux pas.
