I was sitting in class yesterday, listening to a lecture and I had an interesting question.

I usually don't say anything in this class unless it is something VERY important (unlike this forum) and there was utter silence as everyone expected the teacher to answer my question.

After a short "pause", she went right on with her subject.

WHOA!!!!
I was completely blown off, everyone was in a state of shock because my question was DIRECTLY related to our homework assignment.

Then I realized; She didn't have the faintest clue on how to answer the question....and the only way to respond was to PuNk me.....that was the low point of my day.

......errrr.........<pUnK'd>!

My question;

When writing a non-fiction essay that reports on an issue that we don't agree with, but while writing the essay our perceptions change about that issue, so how do we write an essay or disertation without showing any kind of emotion of either support or opposition to the issue at hand?

Ok, I'll go into MORE detail as to how things transpired.............

During the lecture, the professor was talking about feelings and how these feelings are expressed into our writing. But before that, she mentioned when writing a fact-based paper or report, you are to keep your feelings out of the paper as to let the reader judge for themselves without any bias derived from the emotions in the paper.

And there was no pause to explain the difference, where if I were to teach the class, I would give at least an explanation as to what (if any) the reason why a person wouldn't want to show any emotion and even some examples of our to remove those "emotional clauses" from the paper to make it more "factual" instead of "emotional"

But I guess the true fact of the matter is; I got PuNk'D Laughing

Your only concern was how to refrain from injecting possibly persuasive feelings out of a factual paper? That's pretty basic stuff. What is the name of your class?

Well depending on whether your lecturer is korean, i wouldn't be surprised if they were unable to answer that question. You are at a korean university right?

It's an easy enough question.

Whether you support an argument or not.

Just present the facts on both sides, present research offered to prove / discount said facts. Write a conclusion based on research.

EG.

Instead of (off the top of my head) "I think Freud was a coke snorting messed up weirdo who fantasized about his Mum too much."

You could write -

Many critics of Freud cite the fact that there is no way for his theories to be measured using the empirical method. Others mention that his use of Cocaine as an anti neurotic agent had little clinical success and more often than not, lead to disasterous consequences.

Again.

Introduce the topic and contextualize it.

Three or four paragraphs (for an essay) presenting and discussing / analysing research and studies / current theory etc. A conclusion based upon the previous section.

That's it (in a nutshell.)

rawiri, I had been in Korea alittle longer than some of the new tymers (IE, when people, who had lived in Korea for 2~3 years, claim to know alot about Korea, I had already been in Korea for seven years by then)

Just keeping friends, fans and wellwishers up-to-date on things in my life.

Besides, haven't you noticed that this is in fact an Off-Topic Forum?
Aside from being posted in the General Topic Forum, where things that pertained to Korea would most definitely be posted.....

If you want to know how long I was in Korea; note that I was posting on Dave's before this format was created.... Wink

and if you were mathematically inclined, think 2006 and work your way backwards by 10 years, thats how long I was in Korea Very Happy

And Venus, thankies.....
After I was royally PuNk'D, I asked a real teacher about my dilemma and he explained in more clarity about the subject, kinda' like the way you explained it.

No worries man. Once you write a couple of them, you'll have it sussed.

Wow, you were here in 1996!

I'll bet it was a lot different then....?
